Cruising Egypt s Nile River is one of the most popular cruise trips for Brits but in a recent poll, in which we asked: Would you go to Egypt now, 40 percent said yes and 30 percent said no. We wondered: In light of the ongoing unrest there, is now a terrible time to go? Or is it the best time? In this excerpt from a new Letter from an Egypt in Flux feature, Cruise Critic contributor Chris Gray Faust, who last week cruised on Uniworld s River Tosca, shares her impressions.
As I packed for my Nile River cruise on Uniworld s River Tosca , my parents fretted, nervous about my two-week stint in a country still in transition from its January revolution. Are you sure it s safe? my dad asked. I assured him that he needn t worry, little knowing resorts and great hotels that images of Egyptians being mowed down by Army tanks would be broadcast during my stay.
Yet for the most part, I was right. Within the tourist bubble, Egypt remains resorts and great hotels safe to visit. You ll need an ability to go with the flow, however; protests, strikes and riots are still occurring, and probably will continue until the country holds presidential elections in 2012 . I have just come back from a 3 day Cairo hotel stay and 4 day cruise with newmarket holidays. We were a accompanied by an armed guard in the coach in Cairo and at no time during the trip did we see rioting resorts and great hotels or not feeling safe.
Fantastic cruise on M/S Egypt 2/1/2012 peaceful quite lots to do and see ,food first class staff wonderful , ship 7 star we have been on 16 cruises resorts and great hotels nothing has ever been as good as this cruise on Lake Nasser quality is unspeakable converted to river cruises for life. Felt on hundred percent safe did not see any trouble and never felt in danger. A big thank you to all the staff and management for a wonderful and memorable cruise
We went ast March after the winter uprisings, as said above as long as you remain in the tourist bubble then no problems whatsoever. Only hassle are the hawkers and the pointless trips to scrab, factories, perfume factories resorts and great hotels and papyrus shops. Aswan great town no problems but I believe they had armed guards to the big momument at the far end of the Nle but as it set off at 4am and cost a fortune, we did not go.
Infact all of our clients have said what a great time it is to visit Egypt as many of the tourist sites are quiet and infact when I was in Luxor with my family in August we reguarily had whole temples to ourselves.
Having recently returned from a seven night cruise on the MS Royal Viking, followed by three nights in the Mena Oberoi Hotel in Cairo, arranged through Discover resorts and great hotels Egypt in the UK, I can honestly state that my party of four had a fabulous time and were treated resorts and great hotels as welcome tourists at all times. This was our second cruise in two years and our fifth visit to Egypt and would have no hesitation in booking another Egypt exploration trip.
I ve been on two Nile cruises, the second one was a few days after a group of German tourists got shot at at Hatshepsut s temple on the west bank at Luxor. We joined a army convoy from the airport to our Nile cruiser, it did feel a bit scary to begin with but that soon disappeared. We had the whole of the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor temple s to ourselves, not to mention all the other temples we visited further up the Nile.
I would not hesitate to book a Nile cruise, I felt completely safe for the whole of the cruise and the three days I spent in Cairo. In fact I would go as far to say that I felt safer in Eygpt than a lot of places I have visited in Europe, that includes the UK.
We were on River Tosca when the protests began in January. We were well taken care of, and never felt nervous. The only thing we missed were the pyramids, and that was at the end of the trip. The government had closed them for a little while.
The temples and tombs are relatively quiet, although things have picked up since September, and in December and January (except during the Christmas period) prices are at the cheapest they have been all year- this is the same every year by the way. A tour operator advised me that there are around 50% of Nile cruise ships currently not operating.
resorts and great hotels We too have been on the Royal Viking and returned on 19 March 2012. The ship was excellent resorts and great hotels and we could not fault it in any way. Food was better than pother cruise boats we have been on and the crew were very helpful and friendly. resorts and great hotels We did not experience any trouble and, unlike previous Nile cruises, found that most of the sites were uncrowded or near deserted. resorts and great hotels This makes for a great holiday, but not very good for the Egyptian tourist industry. We have also recently (November 2011) visited Taba Heights on the Sinai peninsular and had a wonderful time with no problems.
