Amazing views of poker players are just one of the interesting things to see when visiting the part of the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino hosting the world s most famous poker tournament. Photo by Diane Taylor
My friend Libby made arrangements last weekend for us to attend the Ribbon of Life benefit at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino. Ribbon of Life is a benefit for the local HIV/Aids community. Libby attends every year. We arrived early, united kingdom information so because of a back problem (long story), I decided to walk to the area where the World Series of Poker (WSOP) was being held, also at the Rio. Visitors to Las Vegas often drop in to the World Series of Poker area just to see the poker players in action and to see what else is going on. As I walked through the WSOP area I made a short video of the hallway shopping, and it is part of this article.
By the Way, Ribbon of Life is typically a wonderful united kingdom information show featuring what looks to be hundreds of local performers. Lots of big musical numbers are choreographed just for this show. Yes, singer Clint Holmes was part of the program, as he is part of most fundraisers in Las Vegas. He once told me his motto is just show up and he does.
On Monday, I attended two beauty shows at the Las Vegas Convention Center: the Esthetics, Cosmetics Spa Conference and IBS (International Beauty Show) Las Vegas. Both shows are owned and organized by Questex Media Group. Expected attendance by spa and salon professionals was 40,000 people. Esthetics etc. took place on the ground floor of the convention center s south hall; IBS was on the South Hall second floor. Though education was part of both shows, my visit was to the exhibition (trade show) areas only.
Walking through the Esthetics, Cosmetics Spa Conference was an experience in seeing united kingdom information just how many creams and machines seem to be targeting anti-wrinkling or anti-aging united kingdom information . When we were 15, most of us were pro aging because we wanted to arrive at 16 and earn a driver s license, but somewhere along the line, the cosmetic manufacturers assumed that virtually no one else wants to get older and coined united kingdom information the anti-aging wording. But if we don t age, we
Just as strange (to this non-spa person) was the sight of so many women lying passively (and publicly) on spa tables while a facial technician massaged the person s face and explained to onlookers what miracles united kingdom information were being performed. Some of the products being demonstrated were so fancy, they came to the show from Europe complete with accents.
Other products shown included spray tans, foot peels and ways to contour bodies by wrapping an individual in plastic or by having the customer lie in a sort of head-to-toe costume that, I assume, would squeeze fat thighs into toothpicks. I couldn t imagine . However, I did realize that if a show visitor played her cards right (and most of the attendees were women), one could volunteer for the demonstrations and come away with a couple facials, a new tan, smooth feet and toothpick thighs.
One other word one heard constantly on the first floor was exfoliating . It s as if dead skin were a new sourge united kingdom information and clearly, one needs the right kind of sponge or brush or scrub or machine to get rid of the horrible stuff. Civilization has survived for many years without commercial exfoliating, but one gets the impression now that the girl (or guy) who doesn t exfoliate will most likely be 40 and look like 80. By the way, many spa folks dress like physicians long white coats. I guess if you re paying as much as spas charge, you want to think the person who puts her hands on you is somebody important.
Loud rock music greeted folks attending the International Beauty Show, featuring lots of things younger folks want and need: hair extensions, perfect eyebrows and eye lashes, thicker hair, glittering nail polish, jewelry, t-shirts, hair straighteners and curlers, gel nail products, and whiter teeth. Yep, even near the end of the day, a whole table of folks were having their teeth whitened as I passed united kingdom information by.
The most interesting part of my visit were the competitors in what was called the Battle of the Strands competition. Fantastic headpiece decorations all made of hair were worn by touring models. (A TV show based on the same premise is coming in December.)
One observation: Lots of nail technicians representing manufacturers were demonstrating nail decorations, but none of the technicians I saw were Asian, the folks who own and staff most of today s nail salons.
P.S. On Friday, my husband and I and four friends attended a performance of the Las Vegas Tenors at the LVH. The Tenors, Bobby Black , Shai Yammanee and Lou Gazzara , are appearing from time to time in the Shimmer Cabaret. (Check theLVH.com for dates and times.) All of the Tenors united kingdom information are soloists in their own right, and together they blend perfectly. Our whole group had a great time and highly recommend the show.
