Usually if you buy a round trip, you have to set your dates. With bereavement fares, you can leave the return open which is often necessary in a family emergency.

Something you may not have thought of - check to make sure you know where all of your passports are and that they all are both current and with enough time left on them to allow for a trip several months ahead - not something you want to worry about later.
