We, family of 3, might need to go to the UK soon. My mother (90) has had a fall and is not doing well and might not have long to go. My sister said to not come right away as Mom is in hospital and wouldn't know me if I came now, but to wait until Mom passes on, which I can understand.
BA and United are the only airlines that fly direct to the UK from our local airport. I don't know if they do emergency fares any more and how much more they are likely to be over the regular fare. Do you need to supply hospital info, death cert or anything else? Any info is much appreciated.
Bereavement fares are not that good a deal anymore. They are pretty expensive car rentals shannon airport and teh airlines will often want a phone number of the mortuary car rentals shannon airport to confirm. the advantage car rentals shannon airport on most airlines is that the return date is open.
Another option would be to use Priceline at the last minute. The fare would be good, but they won't promise non-stop flights. You might end up with one stop. Do some research at Betterbidding.com before you do this option.
Sorry about your mother. As lcuy says, bereavement fares are not a good deal. The last time we tried using them we were offered 25% off current fares which was very high. They also required a lot of information as well as a death certificate.
Sorry about your mom. Here's some information about bereavement fares...They are not as inexpensive as buy-in-advance fares because they are last-minute fares, and you can be flexible with the return. Usually if you buy a round trip, you have to set your dates. With bereavement fares, you can leave the return open which is often necessary in a family emergency.
You will likely need cc of the death certificate, hospital notice or other info to fax in. Sometimes they don't ask, but often they do. If you have the name of the funeral home etc and they can fax or email you something that would help.
Something you may not have thought of - check to make sure you know where all of your passports are and that they all are both current and with enough time left on them to allow for a trip several months ahead - not something you want to worry about later.
We will be leaving from Denver and our eventual destination will be Edinburgh. We would probably need to change planes at LHR as only United or BA fly direct to the UK from here and I really don't need or want the hassle of having to have more than one connection at such a stressful time.
We can't afford more than one trip over, and I would rather save that one for the funeral. The last time I saw her was in May and I said my goodbyes then knowing that was probably the last time I would see her as she was getting very frail and not being able to remember quite a few things.
