Didn t want to drive, I live on the Haiku side of Makawao a 7 minute walk into town. In November last year and in January this year the rate for just a compact was and is in excess of $500 for a mere 10 days in paradise. The rate for a standard ride is hovering around the $600 figure and OMG if you wanted a SUV, Mini Van or premium car: $900 and up to $2000 for just 10 days.
Well, Duh! You shop at a convenience store, you pay for the convenience! Try the same test back on the Mainland where you re from. Go to 7-11 and then a regular grocery store. Your test results will be the same as you got here!!!

It isn t about tourists. Tourist supply hundreds of millions of needed dollars to the Hawaii economy. The problem begins when they get to take a one week vacation to Maui. They have a great time, they get to relax, the change of scenery is amazing and they suddenly think they want to live there. Without exploring the local community, finding out about costs of living differences etc. Then they go and buy a condo and once they get there and realize they have to work and it isn t like they vacation they once took, they end up leaving in a year or two. In the mean time though they will gripe about things they should have been expecting in the first place.
Are you saying that you will gladly pay more to support a local business? I m guessing that you refuse to shop and buy gas at Costco. This country needs more people like you. Myself, I m going to try and save every penny by shopping at less expensive stores.
