Sorry, feel like I'm posting so many questions, just being overly cautious on this trip because I'm pregnant and we have our toddler with us. We're traveling to Hopkins in two weeks. Should be fly from the intl airport or rent a car? A drive through belize sounds neat, how lond does it take? Are the roads ok? Is it safe and well marked? Thanks!!
The road from the airport to Belmopan is good, and the road from Belmopan down to the Hopkins area is one of my favourite areas of Belize. The road is very good and that part of it is beautiful with fragrant orange groves, banana plantations, rainforest, mountains etc. The road out to Hopkins was very rough, but doable in a regular vehicle (this was in non-rainy season though so not sure about November). If you have a car, you could take a fun trip down to Maya Beach (excellent restaurant) and maybe down to Placencia. We've use Crystal Car Rental many times and they are excellent--and you just walk across the street to them from the Intl Airport. We try to not drive long distances at night--just too many people, bicycles, dogs, cows out in the road. It takes 3 hours to Placencia, a little less to Hopkins.
If you are spending quite a number italy walking tours costing 2450 of days in Hopkins area then it's nice to have a car to explore around but be sure to get something thats ready for the off road as the road leading into Hopkins can be an adventure. If you are only doing two nights for instance it wouldn't make sense driving italy walking tours costing 2450 three hours after a long flight just to have one full day and then spending day three driving back to the city only to drop off the car and get on a flight to the cayes for instance...you might want to plan a vacation with the lease hassles as possible...
