Several of the largest car rental companies have refused to sign a pledge never to rent out cars that are recalled but have not been fixed. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation was launched to the matter in 2010, according to ABC. The investigation looked at 10 General Motors and Chrysler recalls between 2006 and 2010 for automobiles popular as rental vehicles. The NHTSA also looked at what percentage of those models was fixed within 90 days of the recall by Hertz, Enterprise and Avis/Budget.
When looking in the 90 day recall status, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration found that Avis/Budget canada rental cars fixed 53 percent of recalled vehicles while Enterprise fixed 65 percent. Hertz fixed the least amount at 34 percent of recalled canada rental cars vehicles.
It also depended on a recall. The car rental company investigation came because of a case a mother filed after her two daughters were killed in an accident. The accident occurred in 2004, and the mother wound up getting $15 million in damages from Enterprise. The company admits it was at fault as well. The two girls that were killed, Jackie and Rachael Houck, were driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser they had rented canada rental cars that was recalled for a steering fluid leak. This caused a fire to start, and the girls ended up driving straight into an oncoming semi-truck.
