"The majority of the transatlantic routes will be, in fact, growth routes for us that we think we can get adequate returns, if not very strong returns," he said. "The other side is [more] defensive. There are certain leisure routes [in] the Caribbean, and certain leisure destinations in the U.S. that we make money at but not as much as we'd like."
Mr. Rousseau said roughly half of the LCC's saving will be derived from using a fleet of high-density Boeing Co. 767s and Airbus SAS A319s. While a current 767 in the Air Canada fleet would have roughly 225 seats, the LCC's would have roughly 50 more seats, improving profits.
Spokespeople for Transport Canada and the Canadian Transportation Agency said Air Canada has to file an application for an air operator certificate for the LCC and commence the licensing process for the airline.
Industry sources say that process can take between 90 days to more than a year. If Air Canada were to use its existing labour force, it would be able to launch the LCC with little difficulty by using its existing air operator certificate.
Over the course of the development of the LCC, Mr. Rousseau said the airline had considered several models, including launching in partnership or with a wholly owned subsidiary. The airline has decided on the latter, but it will have its own branding and management group, he said.
At the same time as the launch of the LCC, Mr. Rousseau said, the airline was busy working with its regional the new york helmsley hotel partners, Jazz and others, trying to develop a "competitive response" to WestJet Airlines Ltd.'s new regional carrier, which is planned to launch in the latter half of 2013.
