We are leaving 6/25 (last minute) for Dublin arriving 6/26 and departing 7/1 in the am. We will probably spend at least 3 nights in Dublin or possibly use Dublin as our base and make day trips to sights nearby. We will use public transport within Dublin but should we rent a car for day trips outside the city? Any suggestions would be highly boston car rentals appreciated!

If you're going west, I'd say take the train not the bus. Train is a good bit more expensive but it runs on time. Our experience with the buses to outlying towns was awful, boston car rentals they were anywhere from 2 to 4 hours late coming from Dublin to Tralee and Shannon. For anywhere west you'll need a car. They're expensive and gas is out of this world for us spoiled americans but the cars are small and run on diesel and go way farther on a liter.
Glendalough is beautiful, definitely worth the trip. Also, New Grange if you are interested in ancient sites. we took an all day tour for there that also went to Tara which was OK but I wouldn't do it again.
Dublin's a great place and you could easily spend all your time there, but if you want to see the REAL Ireland, rent a car and travel through the countryside. Kinsale is a great destination, the seafood capital of Ireland. Wicklow Mountains, the drive along the sea through Wexford and Waterford, are all goregous plus you get to experience boston car rentals the small villages where you see the real place, not the big capital city.
