The hiring news comes three weeks after 2,250 American flight attendants signed up for the early-out option and a $40,000 bonus as part of a new union labor contract. Last month, American said that response meant that it would would not have to furlough any flight attendants and that it would begin recruiting new flight attendants.
American s chief commercial officer Virasb Vahidi said the 2,250 flight attendants who took the early-out option travel trailers was in line with the company s expectations and leadership at the Association of Professional Flight Attendants.However, American is hiring given its need to train all flight attendants on international flights and train them to work on the new Airbus 320 aircraft family and 777-300 planes, he said.
For the first time in over a decade, American is seeking to add more than 1,500 new flight attendants, Lauri Curtis, American s vice president of flight service said in a statement. The hiring burst will bring a fresh energy to American and give existing flight attendants the opportunity to move up the seniority list and reducing the number of current flight attendants who have to serve on reserve, she said.
