Negotiations to hammer out a provincewide labour deal with 42,000 Alberta teachers have hit a logjam, and the union is now bypassing the education minister and appealing directly to Premier Alison Redford to consider their four-year offer.
The Alberta Teachers' Association airline fares made the push Friday morning in a letter to the premier, after Education Minister Jeff Johnson rejected the latest offer from the union earlier this week. ATA president Carol Henderson said she wants a response by Monday airline fares at the latest.
Caps have failed to quell workload problems at Alberta schools boards where the restriction is already airline fares in use, he said, and will threaten small schools that cannot hire extra part-time teachers to compensate airline fares for the limits.
airline fares A 30-hour cap is currently part of the contract in the Calgary public system, however airline fares ATA local 38 president Frank Bruseker said teachers are still working an average of 56 hours a week to complete all their tasks.
"What teachers realize is they simply need to do more than 30 hours of work to be ready to do the work of being in the classroom, and have new lessons prepared, and have yesterday's work to be marked, materials lined up, photocopying airline fares to be done," Bruseker said.
A five-year deal orchestrated in 2007 by then Premier Ed Stelmach expired at the end of August. It was the first time a provincewide agreement had been struck on major points; individual school boards have traditionally negotiated all issues with their local unions.
