We're pretty sure you love saving money when traveling abroad as much as we do. With that in mind, we bring you a guest post today from Annie Wang, a writer for  TravelNerd , where she offers four money-saving tips to keep in mind when traveling abroad!
One of the perks of studying abroad is that students get the chance to explore destinations outside of their chosen school or city. After all, what's easier than heading to Barcelona from Madrid or taking a short plane ride from Chile to Peru ? However, these trips can really rack up a sum if students are not careful. Here are 4 tips to help students save big on transportation costs abroad:
For many students, it's tempting to travel on a whim. However, booking flights at the last minute can be expensive. As seats fill up, airlines raise the cost of the remaining tickets, knowing that last-minute stragglers will buy them regardless. Plan ahead as soon as possible so you can watch out for any deals that pop-up seattle underground city tour and take advantage. Some sites, like Kayak.com, let you see prices over the next month so you can see if there are certain days when flights are cheaper. When there are popular events like festivals, sporting championships and holidays, airfare costs are bound to rise due to high demand. Unless you are attending the huge even, choose another time.
If you can, be flexible with your scheduling. It's much cheaper to fly out on weekdays, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, than on weekends. Remember, everyone else also wants to fly out Friday and fly back Monday so if you buy a less-popular itinerary, you will save money. In a similar vein, take the crazy 5:30 AM flight. Nobody wants to wake up at 3:30 AM to catch a flight, so chances are that it will be cheaper than flights that are at a more convenient time. Chances are that whatever time you prefer to fly are the popular times to catch flights – everyone would rather take a Friday afternoon flight after class or work while most people aren't willing to take Saturday early-morning trips. It's worth sacrificing some sleep to save money.
Keep in mind you pay for convenience. seattle underground city tour Direct flights are more expensive than flights seattle underground city tour with connections. If you have time to spare, it may be worth a couple seattle underground city tour hours to layover. Who knows? If you plan it well, you may even have the chance to explore the layover city – a mini-trip seattle underground city tour within a trip. Additionally, think about looking into nearby airports. While it may be more convenient seattle underground city tour to travel to Paris from Charles de Gaulle Airport , it may be cheaper to fly to Paris Orly Airport instead.
Airlines are unbundling their fares. That means that services that used to be included in the ticket price (like checking-in bags, changing tickets and an in-flight snack) are now charged separately. So don't get fooled by that $10 Ryanair ticket. They will charge you for booking with a credit card, bringing a carry-on and printing out your boarding pass at the airport.
Try not to check a bag if possible – almost every major airline charges for checked bags and some airlines even charge for carry-on bags. If you have to check in a bag, research the baggage fees. It's often cheaper to book a reservation for a checked-bag when buying your ticket than buying a checked bag at the airport.
Additionally, think about the bottom line. Even if Spirit Airlines' airfare is cheaper than Delta Airlines, finding out that Spirit Airlines charges $90 while Delta Airlines baggage fees are only $50 means that Delta Airlines is actually seattle underground city tour cheaper in the long run.
Obviously for some destinations, flying is a necessity. However, if you are traveling within a country or around Europe, look into other transportation options. The train may take longer, but it can offer a more scenic route – traveling through the German countryside can be a destination in and of itself. Additionally, the time you spend getting to the airport and getting through airport security can equal the total train time. Buses are an even cheaper form of transportation, if you are willing to sacrifice some comfort and timeliness. Time your trip correctly, take a late night bus, fall asleep and wake up at your destination.
