The St Pete Bicycle shop is located just a block away from the Pinellas Trail system. This trail is a true gem and one of the best trail systems I've seen in a city setting. The trail runs from Tarpon Springs in the north to St. Petersburg in the south, passing through the towns of Dunedin, Clearwater, Largo, Seminole, South Pasadena and Gulfport. It is utilized for walking, jogging, cycling and inline maui bike tours skating. A one way trip on the trail comes in at 38.2 miles (61.5 km) with a round trip of 76.4 miles! There are 4 way stops every couple of miles as you cross a few roads but it's a small price to pay for such a great trail system.
I choose to do a "short" 15 mile out and back route. It was a great chance to see some of the neighborhoods along the way and I enjoyed every minute of the ride. I just wish the weather would have cooperated a little more as I had to battle a good 10-15 MPH headwind and 50 degree temps on the way out. Needless to say, I was extremely happy to reach the turn-around point and enjoyed an easy ride back to the shop.
This is the second time I've rented a bike on a business trip and it's something I really enjoy doing. It provides a chance to experience the local community and it's cycling environment first hand and brings a completely different perspective to the trip.
I'd highly recommend the St. Pete Bicycle and Fitness shop and the Pinellas Trail system to anyone visiting the Tampa, St. Petersburg, or Clearwater area that is looking to go for a flat, easy, and enjoyable ride.
