Almost 50 animals, including lions, bears, monkeys, and 18 rare Bengal tigers were hunted down by officers following the incident. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species estimated as of 2010 that there were fewer than 2,500 Bengal tigers military discounts on airline tickets left in the wild, due mainly to habitat loss and poaching. Director Emeritus of Columbus Zoo Jack Hanna said that the actions were unfortunate but necessary.
Regardless, many officers struggled with what they had to do . Hanna said during a Wednesday press conference, "Going home and saying to their kids they had to shoot a tiger, one of the rarest animals in the world, I wouldn't want to be one of these guys, having to tell my kids."

I just wanted to cry when I saw all those beautiful animals that had to be slaughtered because of this morons actions. military discounts on airline tickets Then to add insult to it all the morons wife wanted the rest of them back, are you frigging kidding me. To start with this man had no god give right to have any of these beautiful animals, military discounts on airline tickets by the sounds military discounts on airline tickets of things they were malnourished and never properly cared for. If Ohio doesn't change the law there regarding being able to have these animals caged up by private citizens, then you are going to see more of these disgusting massacres. Do any of the Ohio Government Officials have a brain.
This tigers weren't part of the sustainable gene pool. They were inbred. All potential eligible tigers are documented, their genetic background known and are CAREFULLY bred by people military discounts on airline tickets who know what they're doing, not by private owners. The animals killed were produced for the pet trade, nothing else. And they likely would've continued to be used to supply the pet trade with tigers cubs who would grow up to live in unnatural and deplorable conditions.
Rather than fund schools (or anything else)? I really don't think people have any idea just how much tranquilizer they'd military discounts on airline tickets have had to have on hand (there probably wasn't enough in the whole state), how many tranq guns they'd have had to have, and how many qualified people they'd have to have not only to accurately dose the animals, but to be able to see the the safety of each one as it went down. Also, who do you think is going to run out and take care of an tranqed animal when there are 4 dozen large predators on the loose? If any animals had died from tranquilizer, there still would've been outrage. What if someone's pet or livestock was killed while they were scrambling to tranq all those animals? Or a person? A child? In an ideal world, the animals wouldn't have been killed. But that went out the window when one vindictive person decided military discounts on airline tickets to get his revenge on the community.
This is a tragedy, but the owner is actually to blame. military discounts on airline tickets He knew what would happen to the animals once he opened their cages. military discounts on airline tickets They're wild animals, of course they're gonna go after other animals or even humans. What he should military discounts on airline tickets have done was just leave them in their cages when he killed himself, and those animals military discounts on airline tickets would probably still be alive today. While I am sorry that he felt that he had to take his own life, he also took almost 50 animal lives with him which probably could have been avoided.
There needs to be stricter lawa on exotic animals...stop them from being sold as pets...they need to be either with their own kind or if not possible then in zoos..or facilities able to handle military discounts on airline tickets these animals..not shot to death..it so sad...so tragic..because of what this man did..if he wanted to kill himself whatever..but he should have left the animals alone..they would have been taken care of ..
If they weren't allowed to be sold as pets or for "educational purposes" (a *giant* loophole), then people like him would end up out of business. The bears may have been taken from the wild, but clearly the exotics weren't. they were bred by private breeders for money - no other purpose. And they continue to produce animals knowing that the animals the produce will come to a dismal end. Dying from incorrect car, inadequate care, being killed after escaping, being killed by other predators when caged together, living in small cramped quarters, on and on and on.
Bottom line Ohio doesn't regulate the ownership of exotic animals. Nobody should be able to take pet ownership military discounts on airline tickets to this level. It's a threat to communities and it's imprisonment and senseless death for majestic animals that deserve so much better. Please sign this petition and or write to the governor of Ohio demanding a ban on exotic pet ownership.
What's w/the debate of whether or not the animals were @ or near their cages? Doesn't matter now does it? Take a good hard look @ the photo and the horrific image it conveys. Thank god it's not people we're looking at but that does not negate the fact that many precious lives were unnecessarily taken that day. Now...take another long hard look and then do something. military discounts on airline tickets Did you all sign the circulating Petition from change.org calling for change? The image of all those innocent victims makes me cry.
The idea is that if the animals were near their cages (as opposed to rampaging through the neighborhoods of Zanesville) the animals may not have been an unacceptable danger that required them to be shot. I agree about the images. Also, the photo of the lion lying by the farm fence made me think, "if they were still on the farm" was it necessary to kill all of the tigers and lions.
I know... it's just @ this point there's nothing we can do with all our theories except to do something so this never happens again, which was my point. From what I understand from what I've read, these animals, or at least the majority, did not get very far and were still on the property military discounts on airline tickets when the shooting began. So, in my book, there was another option, or at least attempt another option, rather than shoot every single one of those animals. I force myself to look @ the picture because it's a reminder.... something needs to be done so this does not happen again.
Sadly, the animals were in surrounding neighborhoods and on other local farms. Only 6 were able to be tranquilized and taken to the Columbus Zoo for treatment. (3 leopards, 2 monkeys and a grizzly bear)
NYT article said that most were shot within military discounts on airline tickets 500 yards of their pens. But lions and tigers were capable of jumping the fence around the property and apparently some had done so. Therefore, I don't think it was unreasonable to shoot the animals still on the property.
I finally saw the blogger who posted that animals were shot while standing in their cages. It seems that false report has been the inspiration for many passionate, yet sorely misinformed, military discounts on airline tickets comments. As I have stated in previous posts. This situation pretty much dominated the news cycles here locally and there were frequent interruptions to regular military discounts on airline tickets programming. I can assure you that absolutely NO animals military discounts on airline tickets were destroyed while "standing in or near their cages" The few that did hang around the compound were a couple of the animals that were effectively tranquilized and moved to the Columbus Zoo. Every other animal that was shot was shot while prowling the local countryside, adjacent farms and local NEIGHBORHOODS. There were numerous heroic attempts by police and other professionals to save some animals. All one needs to do is to lookup the webpages for the local news organizations and you will find ACCURATE information, not the conjecture and hysterical ramblings of some uninformed blogger. The only thing he got right was the name of the City and the number of animals that were killed. Everything else in his blog was completely untrue and actually sounded made up as it was so far away from the facts of this tragedy. He or she should be ashamed of that nonsense they wrote.
I have a feeling that if they had declared an emergency and reached out for help, qualified individuals would have helped recapture most of these animals. Killing them should have been the last resort. Sorry, but the locals bear some responsibility for letting this travesty exist in the first place, and therefore should have been willing to be inconvenienced for one night.
Shooting rare animals by their cages is inexcusable, period. There was no legitimate effort made to recapture them. What were they so afraid of. Haven't they heard of tranquilizers. Did they even bother to contact Animal Control and Zoo experts.
I am seriously pissed off by how this was handled the Chief of Police or whoever authorized military discounts on airline tickets this should be seriously reprimanded Where was the Big Danger to immediately just start shooting. The animals were still at the preserve..
The animals were not in or near their cages. They were released by Mr Thompson before he commited suicide. Nobody knew how long they were at large until calls started coming in to 911. People in the area knew of the farm and knew something military discounts on airline tickets was wrong when lions, bears, wolves and tigers, etc started showing up in surrounding neighborhoods. I live less than 40 miles from the farm and it was a huge deal. The fact that 48 of the 55 animals, military discounts on airline tickets including 18 Bengal Tigers were, sadly, shot is a tragedy. They did manage to trap only 6 animals (2 monkeys, 1
