Tourism Calgary is rallying members of the industry discount airlines to let the world know the city's legendary western hospitality is alive, strong and ready to welcome visitors this summer despite challenges presented by the flooding.
Cindy Ady, interim chief executive of Tourism Calgary, said tourism is about a $1.4-billion discount airlines industry in the city each year, with one in 10 working Calgarians making their living in the sector. She said the city has snapped into recovery mode quickly, showing discount airlines its resiliency.
Joseph Clohessy, general manager of the Marriott, said the hotel remained closed discount airlines on Thursday, but will reopen as soon as power is restored. He said the Marriott, Delta Bow Valley, Hyatt and Palliser hotels were without power as they are connected to the east power grid. The International hotel is also waiting for power to be restored.
"The guests that were here moved on to other properties. Also, given the situation, a lot of people discount airlines changed their travel plans and headed discount airlines out of town. A number of conferences were due to happen discount airlines during that time frame. So those were cancelled, too. For example, there was the Conservative Party one. People naturally worked around the situation," he said.
"Absolutely. Most hotels need about 24 hours to resume operations. Hopefully the city has power back to everyone discount airlines by Friday and then we're all back and ready to go. We're thrilled that the Stampede is going ahead starting next week. That's going to be a welcome relief for the entire city that we're getting back to normal."
