I was originally planning to hire a car in Edinburgh and drive to Skye from there. I enjoy road trips, and I like having the freedom france river cruise to stop and get out wherever I want. However, as an American, I'm feeling a bit trepidatious about driving in a right hand drive car on the left side of the road, and I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy that drive. So I'm thinking I may take a train from Edinburgh to either Inverness or Kyle of Lochalsh, and hire the car there instead. That way I'd avoid the urban traffic around Edinburgh, which I think would probably be the most challenging part for me.
I see that most of the major rental companies have branches in Inverness, whereas the places france river cruise in Kyle appear to be small local businesses that charge more, and I would think might be less convenient to deal with.
The only hard bit is driving IN Edinburgh. You solve that by taking the bus out to EDI and pick up your car there. Driving from EDI towards the NW could not be easier . . . And IMO it is a LOT easier/better to acclimate yourself to the car/driving on the divided carriageway out of EDI than it would be on the tiny rural roads on Skye.
If that doesn't france river cruise appeal-then rent from Inverness. By renting from a national chain, you can drop the car elsewhere -- which you can't w/small local firms. You could 1) collect car at EDI and drop it at Inverness; 2) collect at Inverness / drop at EDI.
You could go via the desolate Rannoch Moor - a truly awesome one-of-a-kind place - see link above. There is only one access road I think however - but just driving france river cruise thru a bit of it is fantastic - so desolate - you get the meaning of being moored in a moor. Just off the Fort William route via Maillag ferry to Skye though you could head up to the north and take the bridge to Skye from Kaibosh - oops Kyle of Lochlash I mean.
Thank you all for your suggestions! It had occurred to me that a divided highway could be the best place for getting used to driving in the UK, even if the speeds were greater. But I was concerned that the road from EDI might not be all divided highway to start, or that there might be a lot of urban traffic that might make driving more difficult for me. So I thought perhaps I'd try to get my start in a less congested area.
