Noted area Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) road racer Rick Kavitski of Freeland returned to a track that he has enjoyed great success at - historic Watkins Glen in New York - for the SCCA Eastern Conference Majors california motorcycle tours Tour.
On Saturday, Kavitski repeated his 2012 E Production runaway in the No. 24 RDK Engineering Mazda Miata. E Production california motorcycle tours is a showroom stock class featuring late model street cars. Other manufactures include BMW, Triumph california motorcycle tours and Honda.
"We knew we had a fast car going in,'' the 27-year-old Kavitski said. "We made some vast improvements over the winter. It really came down to running with new shocks we had, trying to figure them out and making the right adjustments to make the car set in the corners a little better."
Unlike other forms of racing, track time practice is very limited with SCCA events. There are four test sessions, but time is restricted in each. The Kavitski team consists of just Rick and his father Dave.
With a two-man california motorcycle tours operation, it leaves them shorthanded on being able to accomplish all they would like. By the same token, all other teams are under the same time constraints so the playing field is equal from that perspective.
The 14-lap race was made up of a 35-car field that consisted of E, F, H and GT-Lite Production classes. Kavitski wasted little time in jumping out front in Saturday's main and although he would lead flag to flag, he admitted it was tough going as a pair of BMW's chased him early on.
"They had 6-cylinder motors that made them extremely fast and very torqued,'' he explained. "I knew that if I can get through turn one and then to the uphill esses and head to the bus stop portion of the track, I would consistently drive as hard as I can and I felt then that they would have a hard time trying to catch me.
"My father told me over the radio that by lap seven they were drafting each other and closing in. They actually were running under my track record and I just had to keep hitting all my marks and not screw up. If you don't hit your marks then you'll be haunted the whole time around."
"Going up through the esses I was able to pull slightly ahead. At the bus stop they both got around me, but I was able to out-brake them again and I held the lead for the next four laps... My father and I sat down and we put our heads together and thought about how to beat two guys who drafted all last race and got faster and faster."
The BMW two-team strategy did not work as Kavitski stayed between them and held on for a well earned runner-up finish. Dyden won the race, setting a new track record with a lap of 2:07.595. Kavitski held the previous mark (2:08.601).
"Mike Grubb... helped california motorcycle tours us tremendously,'' Kavitski said. "He went over our tire setup that was a big factor for getting into the corners, the apex and end of the straightaways. He was able to get us were we needed to be.
"I was very satisfied with the results,'' he added. "We knew the BMWs were fast all year. Mike asked me what I would rather do Sunday, win Watkins Glen or try a risky setup on the car that would give us loads of data for Road America and the (SCCA) runoffs. We chose the latter and tried his setup. It not only proved to be successful on the track, but we came up with a lot of information that we can now use when we head to Wisconsin in September."
By winning the Glen, Kavitski has punched his ticket for entry into the SCCA National california motorcycle tours Championship california motorcycle tours Runoffs, a veritable "Olympics" of North America road racing, which are held in September at the 4-mile long Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.
Drivers simply don't enter the runoffs; they are invited. To earn an invitation, california motorcycle tours a driver must be among the top 10 in their class in one of nine SCCA Divisions, or is that class' defending national champion.
"I love Road America,'' Kavitski said. "It's a very fast and challenging course... a lot like Watkins Glen. It's not only about setup, but you need speed in the car there. It's a great place to drive and a great place to get us in swing for the runoffs. You load the corners up with a lot of G force. It's also a momentum track. If you can hold that, you will get around there very fast."
