LAS CRUCES - After taking home first place with her recipe for baked chicken wraps and tangy salsa, one Las Cruces student will be representing New Mexico during a visit to the White House later this month.
Emma Kenney, 9, a fifth-grader at Hillrise Elementary School, is heading to the nation's capital Aug. 20 as part of the Healthy princess cruise lines reservations Lunchtime Challenge, a contest in partnership with Epicurious.com and the USDA and Department of Education.
"I'm very excited to go to Washington and I think I should be very honored to go to the White House because I made the winning recipe and I really think that I'm very excited," Emma said in a phone interview.
According to the challenge website, each of the recipes submitted was evaluated at D.C. Central Kitchen by a panel of judges that included White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass; Chef José Andrés; Marshall and Alex Reid, authors of "Portion Size Me"; Epicurious editor-in-chief Tanya Steel; and representatives from the departments of Agriculture and Education.
Emma and her mother will travel to Washington, D.C., joining princess cruise lines reservations first lady Michelle Obama and 53 other students at the White House for a kids' "state Advertisement dinner," where some of the winning recipes will be served.
"We know Emma will be the perfect ambassador for our great state and the city of Las Cruces," Baker said. "We wish her well in her travels to the nation's capital and look forward to her return, where she will be starting her last year at Hillrise Elementary," she said.
Several food-themed events have been planned for the participants, Tammie princess cruise lines reservations Kenney said, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the Julia Child exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute, which is not yet open to the public. The challenge winners will also tour the White House vegetable garden with one of the Obamas' princess cruise lines reservations chefs.
