Yes, my late husband and I always rented cars at the airport and drove all over and stayed in many cities (he was not a big beach person). We rented from Easyway at the airport. We have done the Akumal to Chichen Itza drive a few years ago. It's a long drive thru some very rural areas, so make sure you have plenty of gas. The quickest and easiest drive is on the toll road out of Cancun which is not cheap. The road from Tulum to Chichen Itza has been improved quite a bit. I was just there in July and took a group to Chichen. I also rented from Easyway twice this past summer when I had folks visiting and had a very positive experience with them both times. Typically I do not rent cars any more but I would not hesitate to use them.
