I went to the fabolous Las vegas last week. Stayed tuesday night at one hotel and wednesday at another. Both hotels are huge major casino/ spas inns resorts in northern california hotels on the strip . I reserved both online the eariler in the day at very deeply discounted prices (one was only $30 + tax). Anyhow, i arrived at my first hotel, checked in. and as the lady was enterting my info, she said, oh..i see you are staying one night ill upgrade your room to a suite, no charge . i was whoa! I paid $35 some bucks and i got this 700sq-ft -ish room. And my 2nd night at a DIFFERENT hotel same thing happened. ill upgrade your room for free . 2 suites back to back nights and different property-owned spas inns resorts in northern california hotels .
To say its normal is probably not quite true but its probably easier to get an upgrade in Vegas than anywhere else in the World. It depends on a lot of factors, such as occupancy, time of year/week, your expected or previous spas inns resorts in northern california play and how the desk clerk is feeling that day.

I would have tipped that is not to say that you should but I feel that if I get service above the normal its worthy of a tip and getting a suite when a room is booked regardless of whether its as was requested is to me above normal spas inns resorts in northern california service.
