The Panama Canal is, of course, one of the great wonders of the world. It is impossible to adequately describe its immensity and grandeur. I will try to give you just a few facts that may help explain the amazing engineering feat of the Panama Canal. Imagine having tour master saddle bags engineers who could work this whole thing out back in 1904 to 1914, when it was completed!
tour master saddle bags When entering the three Gatun Locks, tour master saddle bags as seen above, the ship is lifted 85 feet . Each section of the gate locks (built in Pittsburgh, PA with American ingenuity)  weighs 370 tons. Three million gallons of water go through tour master saddle bags each minute. It takes only eight minutes to change the levels of the water and no pumps are used! 52 million gallons of water are required for the crossing of each ship.
The technology of the Panama Canal is remarkable, and yet and yet the only way they have ever been able to hook up the traversing ships is with these little boats with two men who get the wires where they need to go. Even a motor on the boat won t work! If the motor were to fail, they would be trapped and crushed against the pier.
It took the Crystal Symphony more than nine hours to transit through the Canal. In spite of torrential rains ( a common occurrence this time of year), Jerry braved the wet and ran from one end of the ship to another to be sure to see what was happening in all directions. I was a bit more chicken and sat in the beautiful, air conditioned Palm Court much of the day while he got all the great photos.
When in the Panama Canal, the individual guiding the ship is not the ship s captain rather, it s the Panama tour master saddle bags Canal s pilot who comes on board and makes it all work and takes all the responsibility! These cute little tour master saddle bags contraptions  help steer the ship through the canal.
While everything tour master saddle bags seemed so easy and seamless for us on the Crystal Symphony, tour master saddle bags it isn t always tour master saddle bags that way. Jerry caught this small mishap with the camera.  A container ship that had only about eight to twelve inches of clearance tour master saddle bags on each side going through the San Pedro Lock scraped the wall of the lock, causing this puff of smoke and scrape of paint and a huge grinding noise. Imagine what it was like when the USS Missouri went through the Panama Canal many years ago!
