The trip started out wonderfully, and it bears mentioning because airport security experiences are notorious. But the friendliness of the Travel Security Administration (TSA) staff at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport was remarkable.
tom cruise collateral Security personnel greeted passengers with smiles, wished us safe travels and even let me know that my driver s license was expiring soon. Then, after I fumbled around while collecting my belongings, the TSA agent gathered them up and brought them to a spot where I could sit down and reorganize myself.
(Also noteworthy, I made a challenge to myself before this trip. I wanted to see whether I could manage to pack for 10 days in a carry-on. Amazingly, tom cruise collateral following tips found on YouTube, tom cruise collateral including a video from AAA s own Elizabeth Harryman, I was able to do it.)
I was planning on renting a car at Denver tom cruise collateral International Airport , but the cost was prohibitive. After a little research, I discovered I could rent a car in Colorado Springs (about 90 minutes south of Denver) for a third of the cost. Fortunately, my brother lives in Denver. He was able to pick me up at DIA, and I sweet-talked him into driving me down to the Springs to pick up the car in the morning.
Colorado seemed to be on fire during my visit. Not only was it uncharacteristically hot for June (topping 100 degrees), wildfires were burning out of control. As we approached Colorado Springs, we could see the smoke billowing and bursts tom cruise collateral of flames from the Waldo Canyon Fire. It was amazing and scary at the same time.
While in Denver tom cruise collateral , I had the opportunity to stay a couple of nights at the Curtis Hotel . From the minute you walk into the lobby of this downtown hotel, you can t help but smile and say, Look at that! Oh, I remember that! Oh, I have to have one of those. This is a fun spot!
You could borrow the games you loved as a kid and spend the evening reminiscing about how you cried when you lost playing board games with your siblings. Quoting promotional material from the hotel, You don t just stay at The Curtis, you experience it! And it truly was an experience.
My first stop was the Colorado tom cruise collateral State Capitol . Construction began on this beautiful building in 1886 and was completed in 1901. The majority of the materials used for construction including the granite walls, sandstone foundations and rose onyx are from Colorado.
The steps leading up to the Capitol s west entrance have three markers in them. The first was installed in 1909 on the 15th step to indicate the spot that is exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level. In 1947, the words one mile above sea level were inscribed in the steps because the marker had been stolen several times.
In 1969, students from Colorado State University determined that the mile-high step was actually the 18th step and a second marker was installed. Finally, in 2003, using the latest technology, surveyors determined the 13th step was the actual location and a third marker was installed.
Dinner that night was at the Wynkoop Brewing Company with friends visiting from Holland, my brother tom cruise collateral and his date. In an 1888 building in LoDo (Lower Downtown), Wynkoop is Denver s first brew pub, founded by the current governor in 1988. A great place with good food and good brews, this place gets my recommendation if you visit Denver.
Although the aquarium originally opened to record crowds in 1999, it wasn t long before it faced financial difficulties as attendance dipped. In 2003, after entering bankruptcy, the aquarium was purchased by Landry s Restaurants Inc., and the facility began a rebirth.
Exhibits educate visitors about the vast array of sea life. I was initially disappointed when I entered the aquarium because there were opportunities to nickel and dime unsuspecting parents with added activities, but that bad taste quickly passed because of the attentiveness of the volunteers.
At every exhibit volunteers were on hand to answer questions. Polite and considerate, they helped guests understand how important tom cruise collateral water ecosystems are. It was wonderful to watch how they interacted with the children, educating everyone who paused to listen. I also was glad to see that after the first exhibit, those extra opportunities disappeared too (until you arrived in the gift shop)!
I ve been to many museums in my travels, but one of the finest was the Colorado History Center , also in downtown Denver. Walking into a large, open space, you notice an odd-looking machine a time-traveling machine. On the floor is a map of the state of Colorado.
Visitors can pull the machine over a marker on the floor, and appearing on its screens are historical and informational videos about that part of state. Throughout the center are entertaining (even for adults) interactive exhibits. You can try your ski-jumping skills, learn how African-Americans enjoyed a place all their own in the mountains, experience tom cruise collateral life working as a silver tom cruise collateral miner or play What s that Smell?
One of the most moving exhibits was Confined Citizens: The Amache-Granada Relocation Center. After Pearl Harbor, 120,000 Japanese were forced into internment camps, including tom cruise collateral one in Colorado . Most of the internees tom cruise collateral were American citizens none accused of a crime and half were children. This truly was a black mark in American history.
Denver also is home to the Molly Brown House Museum , the home of Titanic survivor Margaret Molly Brown. tom cruise collateral Molly Brown was a socialite and philanthropist and ran for the U.S. Senate BEFORE women received the right to vote. Because it was the 100th anniversary year of the sinking of the Titanic (and I ve been interested in Titanic history since I was a teenager), I really wanted to take a look at the special exhibits on display.
I tried three times to visit the museum and for numerous reasons missed the last tour of the day by five minutes, the museum was closed on my second attempt and the third attempt I couldn t find parking (the museum is in a residential area) and it was too hot to walk too far.
There were a number of other places I didn t get a chance to visit some because time ran out, others because it was too hot to spend too much time outdoors. I m looking forward to visiting again soon!
I didn't tom cruise collateral know unsinkable Molly Brown had a whole museum tom cruise collateral dedicated to her! She was certainly a neat lady although if my life was half as eventful as hers, I would probably stay indoors most of the time
Denver saw record heat this summer, but during most summers residents rarely see a day above 100 degrees. Plus, it's a dry heat and if it gets too hot, a short drive to the mountains will relieve your pain!
