Park your car parallel to the beach in the parking area its free but usually crowded on a sunny day. If you want to surf these waves put a lot of speed into it and expect frequent close outs and shallow areas so dont wipe out too much... these waves are swell 2 to 3 times a year mostly wind chop up to 5 feet, or 6 feet if super-windy. Watch out for man-o-war, sea lice, sharks, seaweed.

Surfed there 3 years - In the early 80s, I lived in Central Beach, one block from the water. Sometimes, I'd just walk up and surf right out front, but the waves were always dumpy/sloppy windswell (careful of the dreaded dredging sandbar face-slam). The closest decent spot was 18th street. It picked up some winter ground swells from the north, but, strangely, windswell lines up from the south were actually much more common (although somewhat crumbly). I surfed every time there was anything ridable, and there was only one day in 3 years I remember that was perfect A-frame barrels. I don't miss the onshore trade winds or lack of swell consistency, but the tropical climate was wonderful to be able to surf in for more than just a one week vacation.
You should have been here before Katrina hit - What nobody knows except us old hairy longboard guys is this; when a hurricane is approaching nice and slow like Katrina did in '05 is when 14th shows what it can do; truth be told it is a sloppy, constantly shifting, sandbar that does break in close, but when its on, there are few places better in Florida except maybe Jupes or Sebastian. As far as sharks, thats pretty funny. Good beach to learn to surf at, lots of girls and groms, fun atmosphere; No aggro attitudes, except for that one overly spoiled costa rica travel Cardinal Gibbons Sophomore that didn't realize I have been surfing longer than he was alive; I informed him of prior fact in front of his friends and he shut up real fast...apart from that, great place to give impromptu surf lessons to visiting costa rica travel wahines
