We looked at nine bankruptcies of major U.S. airlines going back more than two decades, and those carriers – with one exception – averaged 12½ days between the time their bankruptcy london travel judge confirmed their plans of reorganization and their emergence from bankruptcy.
AA/AMR has its confirmation hearing scheduled for Aug. 15 before U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane. Assuming that creditors approve the plan, we would expect him to confirm the plan at that hearing. That would mean an exit on Aug. 27 or 28 if the average of 12 or 13 days holds true..
The big exception was Trans World Airlines’ london travel first bankruptcy that began Jan. 31, 1992. The judge confirmed london travel TWA’s plan on Aug. 11, 1993, but the airline didn’t emerge until 84 days later on Nov. 3, 1993. If AMR and American suffered the same delay, that’d take the exit date to Nov. 7.
Other things have to happen as well. The U.S. Department london travel of Justice is still reviewing the merger proposal for antitrust issues. london travel European regulators are looking at the proposal. US Airways shareholders vote on the merger July 12.
