Schumer and several JetBlue officials, including President Robin Hayes, were in Albany to make the announcement. JetBlue, which Schumer helped launch 15 years ago, serves all major upstate airports except Albany; its original hub, at Kennedy airport in New York City, was too close to Albany to give the airline a competitive edge against ground transportation.
Hayes said that while the two daily round-trips might not seem like a lot of service, he pointed out that JetBlue started service in Buffalo and Rochester with the same number of flights. Today, Buffalo has 15 daily round trips, and Rochester eight.
“I think Southwest is a great carrier; they’ve got a great brand,” Hayes said. “We enjoy competing with them. We have extra legroom, live TV. We’re the first carrier to install high-speed wifi broadband throughout the fleet.”
Much still hasn’t been determined, including fares, and whether JetBlue will use Embraer regional jets or full-size Airbus jets from Albany. Hayes, citing a study last year by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,  said that fares typically drop when JetBlue enters a market.
And while the two Florida cities may seem like leisure destinations, JetBlue does offer connections from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando to Austin and the West Coast, giving business travelers another alternative.
JayK this is a long story. Basically senator used his political powers to get JetBlue enough of landing slots in JFK to set up their operation. Without that, JetBlue would be a minor player by now or more likely would not exist. Service to other NYS cities was expected as a returned favor. Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse do have JetBlue flights cheap air line ticket for quite a while
All true, from what I ve read. My qualm was more with the idea that Sen. Schumer was solely responsible for crafting the actual cheap air line ticket airline schedules, and thus the small total of two flights per day. In any case, I m glad to see them set up shop here, and hope to see more cities and flights in the future.
