I have a trip planned with my 15 year old daughter to Nicaragua in January. We are stopping for the night in Managua and then going to Leon and Granada for 5 days - I have been a liitle worried after looking at the US, UK and Australian consulate websites - they are talking car rentals in san francisco about crime being rampant and advising travelers to exercise a high degree of caution. One post also talks about machete wielding gangs attacking a couple, I am on the verge of canceling my trip. Any advice from anyone who has visited Nicaragua recently would be most welcome!
Our two week trip to Nicaragua was a year ago. We had no problems at all. I just glanced at the US travel info for Nicaragua. It doessn't look any different than any where else in Central America, at least on first glance.
I believe Nicaragua has the lowest crime rate in Central America. I have been to Granada and Managua, as a solo traveler, and never felt worried for my safety. The traveler alerts always make it sound like you are visiting a war zone IMO.
