Recent Comments Immigration Revisited: Migrant Safety in Mexico | Room to Speak on Immigration Revis
After doing a short update on immigration reform in the US last week , I wanted to do an update on another aspect of immigration that I touched on last summer : the difficulties faced by migrants traveling from Central America to the US through Mexico.
The situation remains much the same. Migrants continue to face the risks of extortion and violence from corrupt immigration officials and members of organized crime. Recently, Mexican officials rescued 6 Ecuadoran migrants who
were being held in a hotel room in Chiapas until they paid for the trip north. Migrants still try to use the train (La Bestia) to travel and face injury from the train itself as well as violence or even death if they refuse to pay as much as 1000 Mexican pesos to ride. And recently, the freight train companies have become more aggressive in preventing migrants from riding their trains. Migrant shelters continue to offer a safe haven and traveling in a caravan reduces some of the risks that migrants face traveling alone. Women traveling alone or with children are still at risk for gender-based violence.
Although danger of the situation hasn t diminished, there have been a couple of positive steps in the right direction. The Mexican eagles hotel california live government issued travel visas for members of the Viacrucis Migrante caravan. The caravan, made up of more than 700 migrants travelled in April from Mexico s border with Guatemala and
stopped in Mexico City to speak with officials about the abuses migrants face during their travels through Mexico. While it is a good sign that the Mexican government was finally willing to issue travel visas to some migrants, the caravan still faced difficulties: not all of the visas were honored, and several members eagles hotel california live were beaten.
Another sign of progress comes from the sate of Veracruz eagles hotel california live where officials have begun a public health program focused on improving migrant health and access to health services. The program is comprised of five parts: Go Healthy, Return Healthy, Are you going to the other side? Migration and Health focused on Gender, Migration and Mental Health, and The Train Route. The program aims to educate migrants on maintaing their health during their travels as well as to educate health care providers on ethical treatment of migrants. This is especially important with providers near the route of La Bestia, where migrants are frequently injured. There have been instances of refusing eagles hotel california live care to migrants and this aspect of the program seeks to change that.
