Life hasn’t discount hotels manhattan been easy for Essex, Ontario’s David Byrne, one of 43 Canadians in the field this week at the PGA Tour Canada Tour Championship at London’s Sunningdale Golf and Country Club. Raised by a single mother who worked numerous jobs, Byrne learned early in life about the importance of a strong work ethic. The Sutton Golf and Country Club member overcame enormous odds, and today continues to chase his dream of playing on the PGA Tour.
In 2011, Byrne got a little taste of the big time as he won the Golf Channel’s discount hotels manhattan Big Break Indian Wells. Prior to TV fame, he had earned a scholarship to the University of Detroit-Mercy, where he was 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year. Following graduation in 2010 and prior to filming Big Break, he turned professional and moved to Orlando, Florida.
A three-time Ontario Match Play Champion and top-ranked Ontario amateur in 2007, Byrne has seen limited tee times this season, thanks to back issues. On his Facebook page August 31, he wrote: “Some bad news. It seems as if my PGA Tour Canada year has come to an end. My back just would not co-operate and I have decided to WD and find out what is wrong and do some rehab. Tried to play this week – was very painful and was a result in a missed cut. Will focus on getting healthy, looking for some potential sponsors and keep at it.” He was diagnosed with facet joint irritation, and lumbar spine and soas/rectus femurs.
David Byrne : It was just her and I for a bit there. discount hotels manhattan There were definitely some tough times. I was working at a pretty young age, but it has all paid off now. The last four or five years has been pretty cool in terms of being on the Big Break, living in Florida, playing. For as tough as it was then, it is as good as it is now. I live a really discount hotels manhattan nice life now. There are still the financial struggles, but it is because I am a golfer, not because of anything else, right? (Laughing).
BYRNE : No, it’s not. And you know, you tell somebody you play professional golf and they think, ‘Oh my god, you’re rich.’ But I have had a tough year. It’s definitely discount hotels manhattan not as glamorous as people may think. It wears you down, and it is not a cheap thing to try to pursue.
BYRNE : I played hockey because I am Canadian. I was forced into it (laughing). But at eight years old I had a couple jobs, and at 15 I had four jobs. Some kids might have one. But it’s not like it was brutal. I still got to play on two hockey teams, and I played golf on the ClubLink Tour when I was 14. We would get back at one in the morning. My mom would be at work at 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. It was more of a burden on her than on myself. discount hotels manhattan I was just a kid and I had to work and it wasn’t a big deal. Looking back now I appreciate the value of a dollar.
BYRNE : I think it helps mostly with the travel thing. I have saved a lot more cash than other guys just cause I drove from Orlando, and I went out to California and up the coast to Victoria, B.C. and then across Canada back to Ontario. So and I usually don’t do the hotel thing or rental cars. I guess I watch my money better.
BYRNE : It was my favourite show growing up. I was working the one night and I saw the very first episode and I thought it was a cool concept, and I told my mom that I wanted to be on that show one day.
BYRNE : They called me and asked me to come to Orlando for an audition, and I said sure. And I thought the audition was going to be an hour. So I drove from Windsor to Orlando for a 10-minute audition. I didn’t discount hotels manhattan realize it was 10 minutes. And then they got back to me about a week later and said I was on the show.
BYRNE : I did, yeah, that was nice. I got to play in the Zurich Classic in New Orleans last year which was pretty discount hotels manhattan cool. I got to play a practice round with Luke Donald. I picked his brain for nine or 10 holes. I got some Dick’s Sporting Goods money.
discount hotels manhattan BYRNE : In Winnipeg (The Players Cup July 15-21), my hip was feeling a little weird – strained discount hotels manhattan – and then I got into the car and drove 18 hours home. I got some work on it and the pain kind of went away in my hip and it went to my lower back. Then the whole week it was tender and sore, but I just assumed it was because it was early in the morning and I hadn’t stretched. I played 32 holes the next day and I pretty much just hit the ball and collapsed. And somehow my second round I was bogey-free 68 which it was probably one of the best rounds discount hotels manhattan I have played. I couldn’t bend. So I switched to a belly putter discount hotels manhattan for the second round. I did the same thing in Peterborough (The Wildfire Invitational August 26-September 1). I was like, I am 25 years old, what is going on with the back problems?
BYRNE : It is more of a process. This week I am not going to be hitting the ball as far as I usually do. So I am hoping that whole beware-of-the-injured-golfer thing really pans out for me this week.
My goal was to walk for the 36 holes and hopefully make the cut. I did half of that. The back was … the first day it was so-so. But then the last couple days it was really, really bad. But everyone has injuries. I just need to deal with it. The issue wasn’t my ball striking. I just didn’t make anything on the greens. It’s almost funny.
I would like to think I can tough it out. But at the end of the day, being able to do that, it’s not going to change the money in the bank account. It’s not going to change my status discount hotels manhattan on the Tour. I have to go back to Q school. Back to Essex, trying to find a little bit of money to be able to continue to play. Have to rehab my back. I a have an MRI this week. And see what happens.
