The true theft story I heard from a friend (2nd person knowledge) was an inside job. Someone in maintenance or another role was given access to rooms. Stolen items were electronics (computer, tablet, etc. type items). The hotel was not excited about it and the friend had to do a lot to get their support, really cheap plane tickets including a police report. They did catch the person and the hotel did finally really cheap plane tickets take responsibility about 6 months later. The stolen items were being sold online (multiple thefts). Of course the settlement required a non-disclosure, so I don t know the details but they did replace the stolen items and refunded the stay. I don t think they got much else. Note the friend threatened a very damming TripAdvisor and other reviews unless he/she was compensated.
The rumors are the people that have said maids stole gum and other minor items. It could happen, but I doubt a maid steals gum or other items like it.
