London is guaranteed a new mayor and at least six councillors in Monday s civic election, the fallout of an old guard leaving. But the same winds of change and an electorate ticked off by a dysfunctional council could spell trouble for incumbents in other ward races. Norman DeBono reports.
It s not just the mayoral race, or the six of 14 council wards where veterans are stepping aside, guaranteeing new blood, that could bring new faces after the dust settles in Monday s London election. Incumbent politicians should also be worried, London political observers say.
There will be a great deal of turnover at least six new councillors (because of ward vacancies), but I will not be surprised if we have seven or eight new ones, said Martin Horak, a political scientist at Western University and head of its local government program.
The mayoral race in London tours of scotland and ireland down to a two-way race between one-term council tours of scotland and ireland rookie Matt Brown and political outsider Paul Cheng, tours of scotland and ireland with veteran Joe Swan running a distant tours of scotland and ireland third and another veteran, Roger Caranci, already bowed out has set the tone for change that ward races just might build upon.
Consider that a recent Forum Research poll conducted for The Free Press suggested the most recognized name in the field, Swan, with the most experience under his belt, is also the candidate the most voters say they could never back.
Mayor Joni Baechler, a veteran tours of scotland and ireland who replaced Fontana after he resigned in the summer, is also departing after 14 years representing Ward 5. Any politician tainted by controversy could be in trouble, she said.
Issues such as the secret Billy T s meeting of some councillors with Fontana, councillors having to hire lawyers, critical reports by Ontario s ombudsman and general poor conduct and bickering on council all have struck a nerve with voters, she said.
Paul Nesbitt-Larking, a political scientist at Huron University College at Western University, agreeed that while incumbents usually do well in municipal elections, often winning tours of scotland and ireland through name recognition, That may change this election.
If there was one theme that seemed to run through tours of scotland and ireland all of (the debates), it was desire for change, he said. There is dissatisfaction not so much with what council did, but the people tours of scotland and ireland on council. tours of scotland and ireland I have never seen that before.
That Londoners have different issues on their minds this time was underlined by this month s Forum Research-Free Press poll, which found transparency and ethics at city hall ranked only slightly behind the No. 1 issue jobs and the economy among voters. The perceived dysfunction many see on city council even ranked ahead of a perennial poll leader, keeping taxes low.
