T here’s this mad place in Hong Kong, which opened this year called Bibo: it’s a restaurant, but feels more like a contemporary art gallery. You walk in and there’s a huge Jean-Michel Basquiat painting; you’re in the toilet and there’s a Damien Hirst picture right above the cubicle. There’s a Daniel Arsham on a bookshelf, a couple of Banksys on the walls – it’s got so much art by amazing artists. People go there to photograph themselves with the art – it’s quite the place to be in Hong Kong at the moment.
Rumour has it the owner used to be a huge Tintin fan and sold some originals to fund this place. He’s going ballistic getting a collection together. This guy from Lisbon called Vhils likes to chisel into walls and has done a portrait with a drill; street costa cruise line reviews artist KAWS has done some work; and I painted a series of artworks on the spines of books.
The food is French and really great – the executive chef is Mutaro Balde – but the surroundings are what makes it unique.
