Today I am honored to be a part of the WHEN MY HEART WAS WICKED blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. I not only found the writing in this novel to be beautiful and exquisite but I also enjoyed reading up on a novel that was set in familiar territory.
"I used to be one of those girls. The kind who loved to deliver bad news. When I colored my hair, I imagined it seeping into my scalp, black dye pooling into my veins. But that was the old Lacy. Now, when I cast spells, they are always for good." 16-year-old Lacy believes that magic and science can work side by side. She's a botanist who knows how to harness the healing power of plants. So when her father dies, Lacy tries to stay with her step-mother in Chico, where her magic is good and healing. She fears the darkness europark hotel in barcelona that her real mother, Cheyenne, brings out, stripping europark hotel in barcelona away everything that is light and kind. Yet Cheyenne never stays away for long. Beautiful, bewitching, unstable Cheyenne who will stop at nothing, europark hotel in barcelona not even black magic, to keep control of her daughter's heart. She forces Lacy to accompany her to Sacramento, and before long, the "old" Lacy starts to resurface. But when Lacy survives a traumatic encounter, she finds herself faced with a choice. Will she use her powers to exact revenge and spiral into the darkness forever? Or will she find the strength to embrace the light?
I am a writer. I am also a mother, daughter, wife, sometimes crafter, and voracious reader. I'm outdoorsy and kind of shy. As a child, I was kicked out of girlscouts . I love cheese and bread. I love Anthopologie and Mary Margaret's apartment in Once Upon a Time. I'm a sloppy dogloving person, but I admire the sleek cool of cats. My favorite writers europark hotel in barcelona include Alice Hoffman, Janet Fitch, Donna Tarte , and Aimee Bender. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were also good.
Thank you ! Well I ve always written, but I didn t always want to be a writer. I worked as a barista, a secretary at a law firm, a hostess. T hrough it all though, I wrote. I went to grad school, I wrote. I had babies, I wrote. I am lucky that my husband is understanding and encouraging about my writing. I wrote a lot of short stories and three novels. But I never tried to sell the first two novels. I knew they were my learning how to write books.
2. What is When My Heart Was Wicked about and what inspired you to write it? When M y Heart Was Wicked is ab out a girl, Lacy, who was brought up to protect herself using black magic and dark curses. The magic made her dark inside and she grew to hate everything, including herself. When her mother disappeared, Lacy went to live with her father, and she decided to reinvent herself, successfully. The book begins after her father dies, and her mother returns, wanting Lacy back .
I was thinking about butterflies, transformat ion, reinvention . A nd also step-families. Early on I was thinking of writing the story from Anna s point of view, this woman who lose s her husband europark hotel in barcelona and gains an unhappy teenager. But as I wrote, I realized it was Lacy s story I wanted to tell.
Oh, sweet Lacy. She is torn between the knowledge that her mother is a terrible europark hotel in barcelona parent, ultimately bad for her, and the connection she feels toward her. She loves her mother. I think Lacy is a good person, even when she thinks she isn t. Also I think she s a fairly typical teenager, in that everything is truncated, every moment infused with meaning. europark hotel in barcelona And then there s the whole self-loathing thing. I know I had a whole lot of that going on when I was in high school.
My stepmother, Anna, swears magic exists in the everyday. europark hotel in barcelona I used to think she was full of it, but then one morning at Big Chico Creek we found a mermaid s eye under a patch of birds-foot trefoil. The eye was large and perfectly round like a human s, but it had the glittering green iris of a fish. After that I started europark hotel in barcelona noticing magic in other places too. A swan serenading a catfish at Horseshoe Lake, her neck arching like a quivering europark hotel in barcelona bow in song. A boy with the legs of a goat playing the flute from his canoe along the river.
That you can become the person you want to be, especially when you re young . I wanted to write about a girl who struggles between two dualities w ith in her nature, each of which is equally tempting. And then what happens when her tools are stripped away. I love the ideas of fate and destiny they are so romantic. But I don t believe europark hotel in barcelona in them. I believe we make our own destiny.
I have a website at triciastirling.com. The website has a blog feature, which I ve just begun posting t o. I have a few sh ort stories that you can find online. europark hotel in barcelona I m also on Twitter, Instagram , and Pinterest .
Thank you! I was in college when I decided to become an author. In grad school I became kind of obsessed with the fluidity of language. I started collecting words and playing with them, trying europark hotel in barcelona to find ways to stack them together and make them sing. Carole Maso has some lovely things to say about Language. Home is wherever my mind catches fire, my body. Where Language trembles and burns. europark hotel in barcelona And I love my language. I feel at home in my throat in the fluent afternoon.
8. What writers inspire you? Alice Hoffman. Ellen Gilchrist. Janet Fitch, Laurie Halse Anderson, Francesca Lia Block, Jim Lewis, europark hotel in barcelona Raymond Carver, Aimee Bender, Carole Maso , Hemingway. Honestly, I won t finish reading a book if it doesn t inspire me in some way.

Chico is a magical place. I went to college europark hotel in barcelona there, and it was such a fun place to live and explore. Whenever I talk to other people who spent time in Chico, their voice fills with this blissful longing. Aah , Chico. europark hotel in barcelona Sacramento is my home. I grew up in Southern California, and I was surprised the other day when I realized that I ve lived in Sacramento longer than any other town. It is the only home my children know. I don t think I ll live here forever, but Sacramento will always hold a special place in my heart.
europark hotel in barcelona Reading europark hotel in barcelona is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates europark hotel in barcelona itself. Reading europark hotel in barcelona is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. europark hotel in barcelona Reading is bliss. europark hotel in barcelona Nora Ephron , I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman
