As per information posted in New Zealand Aviation Thread #91 (by NZ1 Jan 28 2011 in Civil Aviation) by PA515, the A320 ZK-OAB is being delivered on routing TLS - YQX - DEN - LAX - HNL - APW - AKL , with overnight stays in DEN and HNL .
This plane is the first of 14 new ordered A320 for Air New Zealand, a renewal of NZ 's shorthaul preferred boston hotels fleet, allowing the retirement preferred boston hotels of their 733s. The later deliveries will be the first A320s to be delivered with the "sharklet" blended preferred boston hotels winglets - I suppose some or all of these will be delivered via the same stops.
There are 12 (IIRC) being delivered with these new winglets, which will join NZ 's international fleet, while the current 12 international A320 will be moved to domestic service (along with the first two new A320).
I just checked Great Circle Mapper and the shortest route for TLS - AKL is across Asia at 11,860 preferred boston hotels miles. The routing mentioned above is 12,960 miles. With a difference of 1,100 miles I would imagine it has something to do with available stopovers and favorable winds. Any other reasons for taking a longer route?
If they went via the Kangaroo route, stopover options are more limited (as are routings - you need overfly permissions for certain countries for example) as is the ability to replace crews on route if so needed.
Great picture! This is their new "All Black" logo jet too. Which in case those in the US aren't aware is the NZ rugby team. I'm sure the main reason for the long way to NZ is pure marketing as they cross the Pacific. The extra 1,500 miles compared to the K-route is easily made up from the hype of free advertising preferred boston hotels along the way home to NZ .
Quoting ERJ ( Reply 7 ): was able to get a decent (for an iPhone) picture from inside the terminal restaurant. It parked at gate A39. Man, the confused looks I got from people trying to figure out what I was looking at...
Hardly. There isn't much of a marketing opportunity with a plane taxiing in and out of a gate. Not to mention the fact that regular pax don't know the slightest difference between planes and liveries. What happens if a passenger seeing the plane in DEN ? Not much - they can't fly NZ from DEN anyway.

ZK-OAB is the 1st of a new order of A320's for ANZ and will be used to replace the 733 fleet, I think as of the schedule there will be 4 handed over this year. ''OAB'' is in in a special 'All Blacks'' theme to build the country's craze up ready for the RWC in Sep. and hence this Aircraft will fly on the main ''KEY'' trunk routes of New Zealand. AKL , CHC , WLG , ZQN . ETC. I don't think there are plans to operate it across the Tasman preferred boston hotels ''NZ1'' might be able to confirm this up. The Aircraft will go onto LAX , HNL then APW before finally arriving into AKL on the 1st of Feb.
