As the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas moved on, Jade began thinking he was not going to survive.

A passenger sailing on Royal Caribbean s Oasis of the Seas fell overboard on Thursday morning, and it went completely unnoticed by anyone on the ship. The Disney Magic, princess cruise lines web page of the Disney Cruise Line fleet, was sailing the exact same route, and was able to rescue the man after he was noticed by someone aboard that ship.
The Milenio reported an American tourist by the name of Frank Jade was on the Royal Caribbean ship and headed for Cozumel when the incident happened. The ship was approximately eight miles from the cruise ports in Cozumel, Mexico, at the time he fell overboard.
As they approached Jade in the water, the Disney Cruise Line ship lowered a rescue boat into the water and were able to pick him up. The crew took him on board, and the Disney princess cruise lines web page Magic docked at Punta Langsota so Jade could be transferred to a private clinic for medical care.
Jade states that he was up early on Thursday morning and had walked up to one of the open decks of the Oasis of the Seas. He said that a large wave ended up knocking him off of the 225,300 ton ship and into the water.
Reports state that Royal Caribbean has not made an effort to comply with the 2010 Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act. That act requires installation of automatic man overboard systems that obviously are not in place on Oasis of the Seas.
Jade said that he began thinking that he wouldn t be able to stay alive long once he had fallen into the water. He was shocked that no one had noticed he had gone overboard, and that he was just floating out there.
As the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas moved on, Jade began thinking he was not going to survive. It was not until he saw the Disney Cruise Line ship that he knew he would be alright, and someone had come to his safety and rescue.
Danny Cox the only mandatory alarms are under a US act which only covers US flagged vessels, of which there is one cruise ship (maybe). But hey, it give Congress the ability to say they are doing something (even it has no meaning) and give the lawyers a chance to bloviate.
These articles are designed to make it seem as though cruises are so dangerous because you can just fall overboard. After having been on three cruises I can say with 100% certainty that you really have to work at it to fall overboard. I do not buy the whole huge wave bullshit.
You have to be a special kind of stupid to fall overboard off the Oasis (or just about any cruise ship). No way a wave knocked him off the ship. A wave that big? Nope. I don t believe it for a minute.
If no one sees you go off there will be no alarm. Simple as that. I was on a RCI ship where a crew member jumped to commit suicide. It was seen and he was recovered within 15 minutes. It is no the ship s fault if the passenger somehow lands in the water (and having been on that ship and her sister, you cannot go overboard unless you are climbing railings).
Yeah!!! I ve been on 6 cruises Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norweigan and you have got to be doing something STUPID for this to happen! Don t buy it at all!!! Not to mention princess cruise lines web page it s not that difficult for someone to go over without someone noticing if it s late night/early morning. It s not the cruise lines fault that you re a complete dumb@ss and you end up overboard. Where oh where has taking personal responsibility gone?
This is a nice article. It satisfies the 5 W s of journalism and does not tell you what your opinion should be about it, you get to make up your own mind. My mind agrees with several others, princess cruise lines web page either he was drunk, he was up a rail taking a selfie, maybe he thought about suicide, or he is just plain dumb, but no wave slapped him off his feet and lifted him over the rail. This isn t a WW II destroyer where the gunnels princess cruise lines web page are even with the sea in a heavy storm.
This is proof that global warming is causing waves to get higher and higher, so much in fact that someone who believes they are safe on a cruise ship is at the mercy of the rising tides due to the ice caps melting. We must, as a world, lower these angry seas by lowering our carbon emissions. Only then will Mother Earth quit trying to eradicate us one by one.
This article is full of holes. I work in marine communications and have spent a lot of time on the Oasis. The Oasis Class ship is the largest cruise ship in existence. A wave big enough to knock someone overboard would of noticed. This guy either jumped, was drunk and fell or doing something stupid. And for the people trying princess cruise lines web page to liability on RCCL, that is just irresponsible and uninformed slander.
The ship weighs 225,300 tons x 2000 pounds = 450,600,000 lbs. How likely is it one man (average weight of an American adult male = 186 lbs.) would be spotted at the precise second he went overboard? I ve sailed on this vessel and I m not buying the rogue wave story he was either drunk, pushed overboard or was attempting princess cruise lines web page suicide .
I ve been on that no wave knocks him off that ship. We went through a storm in that boat, and although uncomfortable, and my wife getting princess cruise lines web page sick, nobody is getting knocked off any viewing spots on deck. He fell or jumped, because he was an idiot
strange how the guy that fell off is the not the victim but the bad guy. and everyone sitting in their living rooms or where ever they have their computers knows better than him. Royal Caribbean certainly doesnt have a very good reputation anymore ..lets princess cruise lines web page turn the ships on their sides so the passengers get a better view of the fish .lol.
How does a wave that big not get noticed. It had to have been a rogue wave and it would have swamped princess cruise lines web page the entire side of the ship up to the deck he was on and it certainly would have been noticed by many passengers and the navigation people. Kind of hard to believe princess cruise lines web page this passenger is not looking for a pay off of some kind.
I find the facts of this story hard to believe. First of all on most major cruise ships the open deck areas are usually way above the water line. If a wave gets that high on one of these cruise ships then that cruise ship is in some deep trouble. Second, you cannot just fall overboard on a cruise princess cruise lines web page ship. The railings are high enough that in order for you to fall overboard you either have to climb up on the railings and horseplay princess cruise lines web page is involved.
Bill Yerkes princess cruise lines web page I totally agree with you. I have been on 8 cruises and I am about to go on my 9th one pretty soon. As you said you have to work VERY hard to fall overboard. I guess he and his family are going to want to sue the cruise line now because they did not get him out of the water.
Been on over 30 cruises, sometimes in seas to rough, parts of the exterior were torn off. NEVER heard of a wave knocking anyone overboard. As the song goes fools rush in or in this case fall overboard.
If you are referring to the Costa Concordia princess cruise lines web page disaster in Italy, you might want to know that Carnival Cruise Lines owns Costa, not Royal Caribbean. Snark only works when pointed in the correct direction.
OK this guy was doing something stupid! Open decks have the plexiglass walls and high railings too .Also, princess cruise lines web page obviously someone wasn t missing him to report him missing it s not like there s a roll call on ships!
there I no way that a wave washed this guy overboard. It would need to be over 40 ft high to reach the first open deck area. Waves that big only appear in a hurricane, not while pulling into a Caribbean port in good weather. This is a phony story.
Kurt Ullman even if the alarms are only mandatory on US flagged ships, why wouldn t other countries ships not just add the alarms to prevent ANY overboard person to go unnoticed? The cost has to be relatively small but is probably the reason the cruise lines won t bother. I also agree the big wave story is bullshit.
I have been on a number of cruises and to be sweep over board by a wave no one else notice lets get real here the wave would have to had been about eight stories high to do this and I am sure that someone would have notice a wave that high.plus everything on the deck would have been wash over also with him. this man was doing something to cause him to go over board
I have been on the Oasis. princess cruise lines web page For a large wave to knock him off the ship, the whole ship would have ben underwater. It is the second largest ship on the ocean, losing out to its sister ship the Allure by only a couple of feet
He is extremely lucky. Cruise princess cruise lines web page ships dump their trash in the water, and essentially chum the waters, which attracts sharks following the boat. He s lucky he didn t become shark bait. I don t believe the huge wave issue, either, since these ships are equipped with stability equipment that prevents them from rocking very much with huge waves . My guess is he was sitting on the edge of the railing and THEN a huge wave came and knocked his dumb ass overboard. Nice that they failed to mention the amount of time he actually spent in the water. Were the two ships coming princess cruise lines web page along one right after the other? Were they six hours apart? Stable condition would infer some hypothermia or perhaps shock from being in the water watching your ship float away.
Law360, New York (March 25, 2014, 3:54 PM ET) During a Tuesday hearing on cruise ship regulatory oversight, a U.S. Coast Guard official told the National Transportation Safety Board that there is still no set timeline for when the agency will be ready to put forward passenger princess cruise lines web page safety rulemaking mandated by Congress in 2010.
Capt. Eric P. Christensen, chief traveling inspector for the Coast Guard, acknowledged that the agency still has no scheduled date for when it will come out with proposed rules for how cruise ships may comply with man-overboard detection systems princess cruise lines web page mandated by the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act.
I m curious how a cruise line…like ANY cruise princess cruise lines web page line…can comply with a law for which there are no regulations and install systems that basically haven t been invented yet. I wonder why the man didn t mention the Serenade of the Seas, the Carnival Freedom, the Carnival Paradise, and the Nieuw Amsterdam, the ships that passed him by on their way into Cozumel behind Oasis o
