It is at least the fourth time a Kiwi driver has disabled a vehicle driven by a foreigner in recent hotel bali weeks and follows at least 10 road crashes involving tourist drivers this month, several of them fatal.
In the latest incident the Otago Daily Times reported the tourist's car keys were taken from their rental vehicle when it stopped at Omarama, in Otago, yesterday, after repeatedly crossing the centre line in the Lindis Pass.
Constable hotel bali Nayland Smith of Omarama said that a Christchurch man who had followed the tourist driving north on State Highway 8 through the Lindis Pass, used a phone to film the driving. He then pulled in behind the vehicle when it stopped about 1pm at an Omarama hotel.
The Christchurch man showed Smith the video and the driver was issued an infringement notice for failing to drive within his lane. The rental company was contacted and the tourist's authority to drive was revoked.
"If somebody witnesses behaviour that is absolutely outrageous or they see somebody who is highly intoxicated hotel bali walking out of a pub and about to get into a car . . . there's legal protections under the Crimes Act [to take action]."
