We all have friends and relatives with very different hotel tastes. My sister is happiest with a well-located clean basic room. I am a self-described pillow snob, and admit to liking nice bathroom goodies. My father just wants the cheapest place with plenty of cable channels and free working internet. And we all know people who are either ridiculously picky, or happy with anything if the price is right.
A client once told me he didn t want to stay at a lovely Kauai hotel I had suggested because an online review had talked about rooster noise in the morning, and he wanted to sleep with the windows open. As it turns out, wild chickens are a protected endangered species on the island, and you may get their wakeup calls at any hotel or condo with an open window.
I have seen reviews saying best rooms ever by someone who either hadn t stayed very many places, or who got a business hotel from Priceline or a similar site at a Motel 6 price. And maybe it was their all-time favorite. But in reality, the place in question was a sterile two or three-star business louisiana swamp tours hotel.
Ditto one person s quaint may be another s decrepit. And standard resort restaurant prices may seem reasonable to some, but outrageous to others. I personally don t usually eat at most resorts I stay at myself, but I understand the high overhead costs.
That s not to say that these sites don t have some advantages, and there is something in numbers. If one person complains about thin walls and noise, well, maybe they are light sleepers. If two dozen people complain, bring earplugs.
What do I do as a travel agent? I do rely on a paid review service louisiana swamp tours we use, as well as personal experience or experience of clients and co-workers I trust, and whose tastes are similar, or who can at least describe a place objectively.
The key to online reviews is to assess them collectively. If there is one horrible review among tens of generally complimentary reviews, I know I can ignore the sourpuss. Conversely, if there is one positive review among a dozen never agains well, I ll be looking louisiana swamp tours elsewhere. Tripadvisor has by far the most reviews of any site and the sheer quantity of posts allows one to be able to filter the outliers. You are left with a pretty honest picture of what to expect.
Well, the ONE thing that is NOT referenced in the post are shill posts from the hotels themselves it happens in every industry. You get rave reviews for properties that you ve been too and that are dumps or nothing special. Either the reviews are shills or they are from folks from some holler in Kentucky who think that Greyhound is a fancy form of transportation, a new car is anything that has an airbag and plastic wrapped glasses are a novelty.
The most peculiar group of hotel reviews I ever saw on TripAdvisor were for a hotel in Washington, DC. The reviews were either 5 s or 1 s with virtually nothing in the middle. I had already paid for the room so I stayed there with my granddaughter. Our room was probably the plainest I have ever seen (everything white or beige with not one picture or other decorative item on the walls), but the room was clean, the beds were comfortable, everything in the bathroom functioned correctly, the pool was pleasant, the staff was business-like and courteous, and the location was very good. I never figured out what the 1 ratings were based on. I would not have given it a 5 but it was at least a 3 or a 4. The ratings give some idea of what to expect in a hotel, but they certainly aren t infalliable guides.
All are very good comments. As an industry professional, I wrote a book solely louisiana swamp tours about understanding reviews because my guests seemed so confused by the process. I concur with all comments here take reviews with a grain of salt, check different sites, go by the averages but above all, understand the dynamics of a review to begin with.
Someone crabbing about being overcharged is not a reason to trash a property in total, or give it a 1 . And reviews that say everything was wonderful down to how hot the eggs were might be a planted review, simply because there is TOO MUCH info given. Also, some reviews say a place was the most wonderful hotel they had stayed in but they rate it only a 4 . Why? Different value systems some think only a 5 star hotel should ge a 5 so even though they love it and plan to return, they lower the average by constantly giving 4 s.
