I had a wonderful New Year s Day yesterday walking in the Tournament of Roses Parade with our Pasadena City College Honor Band. Each year I become more and more appreciative of the privilege that Director Kyle Luck, the staff and the students give me in allowing me to walk with them. From the first boarding of the bus in the dark and cold on campus at 5:45AM to the last step in Victory Park around 11:30AM, it is one, long, joyous 5.5 mile Magical Mystery Tour.

Well, it is. The magical mystery tour is waiting to take us away. That s what the wonderful young people download blue collar comedy tour of our PCC Honor band taught me yesterday with their interpretation of this Beatles standard. Life is indeed a magical mystery tour best taken with the openness and freshness of the young and young at heart. Walking that parade route with our great band created a geography of hope and possibility that carries us all into this new year, 2013.
Here s one last bit of sweetness from yesterday: At the end of the parade all of the bands and they come from all over the world have an informal post-parade picnic in Victory Park, courtesy of of Inn-N-Out Burgers. (Nothing like a heart attack cheeseburger to get your New Year s resolutions off to a great start!) Anyway, the young people from the many bands mix and trade lapel pins. The PCC pins are highly prized. I spent many happy moments observing our students trading pins and taking photos with other bands from different countries. Ours is truly a global community college. Observing our young people, one cannot help but come away filled with optimism about this new year.
