Named after Sir Norman Macalister, an early British governor of Penang, Malaysia, Macalister Mansion is a contemporary boutique hotel located in the center of Georgetown. This early 20th century colonial mansion has been completely renovated by Singapore's Ministry of Design , in collaboration with hotel owners Dato Sean and Datin Karen. The restoration of this 100-year-old building is in accordance with the city's designation smithville new jersey hotels as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Upon pulling into the driveway entrance, an oversize faceted bust of Sir Macalister greets guests, smithville new jersey hotels lending to the quirky sophistication which embodies the hotel's redesign. The imposing exterior is a vision in bright white with its intricate traditional facade. With eight rooms and distinctive lounging and dining areas, the property intrigues.
A masterful mix of historical restoration with contemporary materials makes this unique hotel what it is. Dressed in grey, white and pale woods, each of the rooms are slightly different, not necessarily in theme, but with modern furnishings and layout. Sleek glass partitions, mirrored walls, platform beds with uplighting, captivating tile mosaics and commissioned artworks beautifully contrast the historic columns, paneling, trusses and ironwork. smithville new jersey hotels Some rooms feature double doors opening to the tiled balconies overlooking the pool and grounds.
Something I admire is how this property kept the communal areas so simply named. For instance, there's the Living Room, which is actually a casual dining/relaxing area boasting iron filagree windows with classic tile floors, yet it pops with retro seating in an eclectic setting. The pool table is so unexpected with fits well within this free space. The Dining Room, bathed smithville new jersey hotels in white with a tent-draped ceiling and accented with sea-blue, is where fine cuisine can be enjoyed. Kitschy statues of deer and squirrels perched in an all-white tree tree add interest, if not a cheeky appeal to this space.
The Cellar is a wine bar, offering over 300 labels from around the globe, where guests can sip and savor in a gleaming red, black, copper and chrome setting. The Den is a deluxe cigar-and-whiskey bar enveloped in a rich, mysterious palette of black, gold and red with sumptuous leather seating arrangements. One of my favorite spots amongst this modern boutique hotel may be The Lawn. Venture to this area on a sun-kissed afternoon and succumb to the stunning tiled pool with adjoining swim-up bar.
