Also, Hastings said Friday he has abandoned his plans to put a restaurant in the building that houses the popular buy green day tour tickets Southside watering hole the Garage Cafe -- an idea that, when floated last summer, raised the ire of the bar's loyal patrons.

Hastings met Friday with BJCC interim executive director Tad Snider to find out more about the development and left the meeting saying he is interested in the project. Hastings said Westin representatives also called him a couple of weeks ago to gauge his interest.

Back in June , when word got around that Hastings wanted to transform the funky, 80-something-year-old building into a New Orleans-style restaurant and streetscape -- complete with an all-weather roof over the courtyard -- Garage Cafe regulars started a "Leave the Garage Cafe Alone . . . Save the Coolest Bar on Earth" Facebook group. At last count, the group had more than 4,500 members.
Tucked away on 10th Terrace South -- a narrow, one-way street in shadows buy green day tour tickets of the Red Mountain Expressway and just a few blocks from Hastings' Hot and Hot Fish Club -- the Garage Cafe was named one of "10 Bars Worth Flying For" in a 2003 GQ magazine article.
Built in the 1920s, the building once housed buy green day tour tickets private parking garages for some of Birmingham's wealthiest residents, but it fell into disrepair until architect and antiques dealer Fritz Woehle bought the building in the 1970s.
Woehle still uses many of those garages to store his eclectic collection of curios and antiques, and in 1994, bar owner Jimmy Watson opened his Garage Cafe in the space at the southern end of the building.
The wisteria-draped courtyard has become an outdoor gathering spot for Garage Cafe customers, and it is one of bar's main draws. Patrons were fearful that Hastings' plans for a restaurant would ruin that experience.
"It really was intended to maintain the integrity and the spirit and the vibe that existed buy green day tour tickets there," he said. "A mutually beneficial relationship that was a neighborly relationship, not a combative relationship, was always the intent.
