Looking for a "close to it all" hotel (theater district / shopping) that is relatively reasonable. Mother / daughter traveling in early or mid November. Any hidden gems out there? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
While I wouldn't call it a gem, the Shoreham is well located for Fifth ave. shopping cheap car rentals in san diego and walkable to the theater. It's in need of renovation but run by Affinia who manage a good hotel. The Park Central which has been a dump for many years is newly renovated and well located. The Hilton Garden Inn Times Square and west 35 st are only 3* but in many ways nicer than the 4*s. if you can share one bed, the St. Giles Court is often a secret sale on quikbook.com (works like Hotwire). It will say Murray Hil delixe 4*.
What is reasonable? I often stay in the Times Square area as I mainly go to NY for theater, and last time I stayed in the Hotel at Times Square (I think that's its name, on 46th St, owned by Apple Core). That used to be a Quality Inn as I recall, I stayed there then, also. It's fine and it reasonably priced. I was just checking its rates for someone else looking for a triple in November, and you can get a 2 rm suite there for only $300, so I'm sure doubles are reasonable. This is an excellent location, only a block or two from a subway stop, near the theaters and some good restaurants. Their doubles are only about $210-240 the third week in November, if available.
I've also gotten good deals at the Novotel a bit north of there, around Thanksgiving, but right now their rooms seem to be more around $300 a night in November. I paid more like $200 which was a good deal a couple years ago. They are probably a 4*.
I used them for my trip last year and didn't have any problems. They have cheaper rates than Expedia or Ebookers, but the problem with NYC is that it's just really, really expensive. I'm not sure if you'll find something in the center for that price, but you can always try.
The only problem with that web site is that the cheapest hotels are either places you wouldn't stay (used by prostitutes or unstable/unsavory people) or out by the airports or other long distances from Manhattan.
