My oh-so-clumsy father forgot to bring his US Visa to the Hong Kong International Airport with him, and tried to board a flight to LA. Oh dear. This meant that my mum and I had to frantically rush over to give him his Visa, which then  meant he missed his flight. Luckily, he got transferred onto the 11.45pm flight without too much hassle. To avoid nagging and the familiar “I told you so!” from his wife, he decided to bring us out for dinner. We spent a long time trying to find a restaurant that served Western food. The Burger King is currently under renovation and the scrumptious Grappa’s restaurant is closed.
Finally, we just decided to go to the Regal Airport Hotel to find a restaurant. Which brings paul mccartney us tour me onto today’s review: Café Aficionado. From the name, you’d probably think Italian food (the name itself means “amateur”; a great word to describe the chef) but it turns out this place serves everything from Indian to Chinese to American. It’s pretty pricey, considering the quality of the food (although it is the airport hotel), and its location is extremely confusing. It is supposed to be on the second floor, which is below the ground floor. Don’t worry if the directions are unclear – just ask for the “China Coast Bar and Grill”, which despite its name, serves American food, mostly burgers and pies.
Café Aficionado a great place to review, because it gives me a lot to criticize. Let’s start with the cons, before you get your hopes too high. Firstly, the minute you walk in there, you feel like a clown attending a kid’s birthday party. There are colorful balloons hanging over the place, contrasting against paul mccartney us tour the white washed walls. The first thing you walk past is a bookshelf paul mccartney us tour selling “fun English paul mccartney us tour learning books”. Perhaps the Chef couldn’t earn enough by selling his sub-par food, and switched to literature instead.
My mum ordered the Nasi Goreng, which is Indonesian fried rice with prawn crackers and satay topped with a fried egg. The portions paul mccartney us tour are a decent size, and the complimentary chili sauce was a nice touch but the satay was far too dry. Eating it gives you a satisfying paul mccartney us tour jaw workout. The prawn chips were also a disappointment. They tasted stale and old, like the stuff you can buy at bargain supermarkets.  The egg and the rice itself was edible (thankfully), although it was quite greasy and left you with that bloated feeling paul mccartney us tour (Dieters – watch out!). paul mccartney us tour Out of 5 stars I would give it 3.
My father and I shared the signature 9 oz. Angus Beef Burger with cheese and avocado (these add-ons are HKD$15 extra each). It came with a lot of ketchup and mustard, and again, the portions were decently sized. The burger also comes with skinny fries, which look and taste like those from McDonalds. I’d say  3 ½ stars.
paul mccartney us tour My father ordered a “Greenies” drink, which does not, I guarantee make you green. It’s a mix of freshly paul mccartney us tour blended apple and carrot juice, and was HKD$22. It’s quite sour, but nice all the same. 3 out of 5 stars.
I had a strawberry milkshake. It should come with a food poisoning paul mccartney us tour warning for the little kids, seeing as I ordered it from the kid’s menu (although it says in big letters: Only for kids age 3-11, they pretty much let anyone order it). The three ingredients: Strawberries (or were they little red bits of plastic? I shall never know), water, and milk powder. Yes, you read it right – milk powder. Readers, if you want a source of real calcium, don’t order the milkshake. Ever. For the kids who are too curious to know what it tastes like, try this simple experiment: Get a cup of water, and drop in a few flakes of milk powder. Don’t even stir it, just drink. That’s how bad it was (possibly worse). They should  really switch the names around. This drink is bound to make you feel green! The “milkshake” was super thin and had absolutely no texture to it.
The restaurant also has a buffet. It’s not that big, but they do have lots of different types of cuisine: A Chinese noodle table, Western food, a Japanese table with soba noodles and sashimi, another Asian table, and two dessert tables, which include a chocolate fountain and an ice cream bar with 6 flavours of Movenpick ice cream. The kid’s buffet is entirely different, with six plates of jelly beans, and bowls full of candy (whatever happened to healthy eating?) and jelly and other desserts. Not a single vegetable or fruit could be found (unless you count the coconut shavings on the jelly).
So, would I recommend this hotel? Not really. The moral of this post is to not forget your Visa or any other important document at home. Alternatively, you could write to Burger King and tell them to speed up their renovation process.
