One might think that visiting Mexico in the summer is "loco" since our hot, sunny season is criminally short, land and sea cruises in the mediterranean but two words changed my mind last August: WHALE SHARKS! Summer is the only time they congregate in Cancun, and snorkeling with them was big on my bucket list.
We flew WestJet through Toronto and stayed at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort Spa which has the additional bonus of being attached to sister resort CasaMagna Cancun Marriott land and sea cruises in the mediterranean . Guests double their pleasures in two very different ambiences including a wonderful winding circuit of pools cresting a pristine white sand beach. Dining options include Italian, Japanese, Thai and continental, and we tried them all and were never less than impressed. We also took a tequila-appreciation class and maybe overdid our "homework" which led to singing karaoke in their Champion Sports Bar. We also enjoyed intense massages at their spa. But even though the creature comforts were sublime, I could hardly sleep the night before the big adventure. I was too excited.
Our tour operator was Solo Buceo , we traveled about an hour with them by small boat until we found the feeding grounds. They were everywhere! land and sea cruises in the mediterranean I almost changed my mind. Though they're neither really whales nor sharks but actually the world's largest fish and they no pose no threat to man as they eat only plankton, their sheer size is extremely intimidating! But our excellent guide took my hand reassuringly, and soon we were eye-to-eye with a creature of such beauty and magnitude that I literally cried underwater. land and sea cruises in the mediterranean And they glow! From the boat you can see their bright white spots, but underwater, they have neon patterns land and sea cruises in the mediterranean which are their signature constellations to attract mates. The lines glow so brightly they look electric! After a few hours of interaction we were exhilarated but exhausted. It was an unforgettable experience.
The next day we explored the Mayan ruins at Tulum, and then stopped to swim at a freshwater cenote. Then it was lunch at Oscar y Lalos for authentic Mexican cuisine and a visit from their resident mascot "Lalita" the spider monkey! All very cool, but upon returning to the hotel we received even cooler news. A batch of baby sea turtles had just hatched and we were invited to be part of the Marriott's sea turtle protection and release program ! There is a sea turtle nursery on-site and they've protected over 5,000 eggs this year alone. These endangered little guys need some human help to ensure they get to the waves unharmed. So exactly at sunset, 120 of us were charged with one hatchling each to set safely out to sea. We did so with a tear and a prayer… and it was incredible.
