posted 18 February 2013 10:13 AM We will be traveling with friends in October and need some advice for a car rental size. I'm looking at the Passat Estate or Nissan Qashqai SUV. Four adults with four pieces of luggage and small carry-on items. cheap hotels in daytona florida We once rented a van type auto and swore we would never do that again. Hard to tell from the websites if either of the cars I'm interested in will work okay. If not, any suggestions?
It's more then big enough IMHO for four people. What I'd worry about is fitting all the luggage in the back. But that's the same issue with virtually anything Posts: 2658 | Location: Medio Vastese | Registered: 07 March 2006
posted 18 February 2013 11:08 AM Hide Post Yeah, Nick brings up a good point. We rented a alfa 156 for our trip (similar luggage to you). It was fine for four adults, but we realized immediately it wouldn't fit the luggage. While we waited for my brother's plane to land, we went back to the rental area and luckily they swapped it out for the hatchback. Even then, on our return to the airport (with all our purchases) we sat with luggage and things cheap hotels in daytona florida on our laps.
What bothered cheap hotels in daytona florida me was that on the site, it claimed to have similar luggage to a camry. So we loaded our friend's camry with luggage to get an idea of the space and it wasn't anything like the camry. I wrote to AE when we returned telling cheap hotels in daytona florida them of the discrepancy - wonder if they ever changed it... Kim
posted 18 February 2013 11:19 AM Hide Post We rented a Ford hatchback (not sure of the model) in the fall of 2011 for four of us. No problem with fitting all of the bags. I believe we may have put one bag in the middle back seat. But we only had to drive from the Florence airport to our place in Certaldo so it was a comfortable ride.
My guess is they're just using the manufacturers published size in terms of cubic inches/litres. The problem is the shape of the trunk and the shape of the luggage matters more then the absolute number of inches. I have a Passat wagon here in the U.S. It's huge, swallows our luggage cheap hotels in daytona florida for long domestic vacations. The Qashqai cheap hotels in daytona florida is smaller, a longer version is sold as the Nissan Rogue in the U.S. You might not have enough room in the Qashqai for luggage. Keep in mind that the Passat cheap hotels in daytona florida wagon is probably one of the bigger cars on the road in Italy; anything bigger and you'll have trouble parking, cheap hotels in daytona florida maneuvering, etc. Posts: 247 | Location: New York and Perugia, Italia | Registered: 21 April 2008
posted 18 February 2013 03:45 PM Hide Post Wow, this is really difficult and the wording they use doesn't appear to mean much. We like the sound of the Peugeot 308 Estate, but it says it's a Compact and the Peugeot 508 is midsize.
I know trying to take less is an option, cheap hotels in daytona florida but we will be in Italy for two weeks, one full week in Tuscany, then we will drive down to Naples, turn in the car and a driver will take us to Positano. We will not have access to a washing cheap hotels in daytona florida machine the entire time. My husband and I each take very lightweight 24 inch roller cases and I'm not sure what our friends will have. I think we rented a Mazda wagon on our last trip with them and we made it work, but I don't see that listed anymore.
posted 18 February 2013 04:09 PM Hide Post The Peugeot 308 is like a Jetta wagon in the U.S. The 508 is Passat/Camry/Accord size, i.e., a size above, midsize in the U.S. Posts: 247 | Location: New York and Perugia, Italia cheap hotels in daytona florida | Registered: 21 April 2008
posted 18 February 2013 05:28 PM Hide Post Thanks NuccioP and Jane. I did find the Renault Megane on AE UK, so that may work as well. However, the Peugeot 508 may work for us the best, has it has no excess and includes an additional driver.
posted 18 February 2013 06:19 PM Hide Post I can't tell you anything about those models in particular. However, I will tell you that we have found that what the Italians consider "midsize" and what we do are two different things. My husband and I and our two daughters cheap hotels in daytona florida (now adults) cheap hotels in daytona florida have been going to Italy almost every summer since 1999; we always rent a car in Rome to drive to the Adriatic. We have had similar problems with renting a car that was too big for where we were going, plus my husband prefers to drive a smaller car, so we make an effort to NOT rent something bigger than we need. Nevertheless, last summer we had to go back and exchange the car because we could not get our luggage in.
And we do not have much luggage! Ever since my husband cheap hotels in daytona florida had a bad experience with luggage going missing overseas, he has basically insisted that each of us take nothing larger than a carryon cheap hotels in daytona florida suitcase, plus our "personal item". (Yes, we manage to vacation for two weeks with only what we can fit in a carryon, and we do not have access to a laundry either. But it was impossible to get 4 carryon bags into the trunk of the first car (or not even 3, plus one in the back seat)! We were lucky that there was another car available. Even Car #2 left a lot to be desired (trunk-wise) but it worked.
posted 18 February 2013 06:32 PM Hide Post Peugeot, confusingly, cheap hotels in daytona florida has a 308 and a 3008. I would describe the 308 as quite small - the 3008 is what I have and was chosen as something not too large for city driving and parking but with very good luggage capacity. We have two daughters at college and need to drag tons of their stuff up and down the motorway and it has been up to that challenge. The floor of the boot (trunk) has can be dropped cheap hotels in daytona florida to adjust to the need. We had a Renault cheap hotels in daytona florida Scenic Megane before and it is a similar cheap hotels in daytona florida luggage capacity to that. If you get offered a Peugeot 3008, I would recommend - ours is an automatic, btw.
It is similiar in overall size to the Nissan Qashqai, which is hugely popular in the UK, but my 6ft husband found the headroom in that too low and the interior does feel cramped, in our opinion Posts: 4889 | Location: London, UK | Registered: 20 September 2006
posted 19 February 2013 08:11 AM Hide Post I've been renting from AE in Italy for 10 years for 3-4 months each year and have had the opportunity to drive quite a few of their cars offered. The problem with trying to rent a specific car/SW or SUV is that they never seem to give what you really want despite the prepaid rental /request( even if its an automatic). This past fall I prepaid for a B class Mercedes Benz( lots of rear storage space)and was upgraded to the Peugeot 508 and despite being a large really nice passenger car the trunk space didnt work for 4 bags. The Peugeot 3008 SUV would be perfect and comfortable for 4 people. In the 6 weeks weeks I was there they were never able to get me an automatic 3008..plenty of manual stick shift but that didn't help me. The Peugeot 5008 would also work and is bit bigger. posted 19 February 2013 09:29 AM Hide Post Panda and Vico Girl, thank you very much. Sounds like the 3008 would be perfect for us, but it isn't shown on the AEUK website. I always rent through the UK site, as it is SO much cheaper. The site always says "or similiar," but in this case, I hope they supply us with the car we really ask for. All four of us drive standard shift cars, so that's never a problem.
They do offer the 5008, however, so I hope it isn't like a monster car in Italy if it ends up our only choice. We will be using it to and from both airports and the rest of the time will be spent in the Tuscany countryside. Let's hope we luck out and get the 3008.

There are some very good car reviews where part of the review shows you the storage space.
