Do you need a car ?  Maybe.   If you're traveling downtown for a quick trip, and staying downtown, take a cab. You won't have to worry about parking fees or hotel parking fees.  (Parking discount hotels orlando rates can be up to $12/hour, and some hotels charge $30+ to park your car overnight/per night.)
If you plan on exploring or sightseeing, rent a car, just have cash ready for valets or unmanned parking boxes, and be aware of the fees you may be charged for parking overnight. This is mostly for high-end hotels and hotels downtown, of course.
