It's a fact of life I am afraid, that apart from Florida and California, when picking up your US car hire in one city/state and dropping off in another you are going to have to pay a one way fee to cover the cost of the rental supplier moving their cars around cruising world magazine the country.
One way rentals are completely free within the state of Florida.  One way rentals are usually free within the state of California, but there is a current exception on Convertible cars collected in San Francisco from Alamo.  If the convertible is to be dropped at any other location within San Fransico or California a $300 fee will apply for all collections from now until 31st August 2012.  If you plan on dropping the car further away (see normal one-way cruising world magazine fees below) then the usual fee will apply.  As we have our really useful Alamo Young Drivers Package allowing up to three drivers aged 21 24, it is a shame to have this car restricted for popular road trips.  However, convertibles are available without a surcharge from Sacremento Airport.  This is nearly two hours from San Fran, but if you are serious about a road trip in a Ford Mustang then that could be an option cruising world magazine to explore!
