In this new year Green Lodging News will be following many different developing stories but there are a handful that will merit special attention. Not in any particular order, they include: the development of LEED v4, the release of the final ASTM International green meeting standard Accommodations, the release of Marriott International s Green Hotels Global tool, and progress in the use of HCMI 1.0, the methodology to calculate and communicate the carbon footprint of hotel stays and meetings. LEED v4 is the newest update to the LEED rating systems. Changes from LEED 2009 are seen in three main categories: new market sectors, increased technical rigor and streamlined services. Beta testing will wrap up in November and U.S. Green Building Council members will have a chance to vote on LEED v4 this summer. In November 2011, the Convention Industry Council (CIC) announced that eight of the nine APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting standards were complete. Our industry is still waiting on the release of the Accommodations standards. Sue Tinnish, technical contact for the standards, told me the Accommodations standards are currently at a standstill pending a meeting in March at which an appeal will be reviewed. The Accommodations standards could be final as early as April.
Marriott is aiming for March for the official rollout of the Carbon Accounting Company's Green Hotels Global tool, an online environmental sustainability dashboard. The system collects data and calculates each hotel s carbon footprint according to new industry guidelines. It also calculates each hotel s water footprint and waste diversion rate and maintains a comprehensive list of each hotel s environmental practices. Approximately 3,700 hotels will be using the tool. Eventually, the dashboard reports will be available to all travelers and available at different places online but initial attention will be given to making the reports available to meeting planners los angeles community college district and business travel professionals.
The International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and the World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with 23 leading global los angeles community college district hospitality companies, in June 2012 launched a methodology to calculate and communicate the carbon footprint of hotel stays and meetings los angeles community college district in a consistent and transparent way. The methodology, HCMI 1.0, is designed to be applied by any hotel around the world. According to the methodology, a hotel s carbon footprint equals total energy usage (electricity, gas, gas oil plus any additional energy sources) plus energy usage from outsourced laundry (if applicable) less energy consumed in private space (if applicable) converted into tonnes of CO2e using the most relevant emission los angeles community college district factor for the country/state. For carbon reporting los angeles community college district purposes, the hotel is divided into its two main services, guestrooms and meeting space, to avoid overlapping of footprints for guests that both attend meetings and stay at the hotel. It will be interesting to see what companies inside and outside of the lodging sector actually use the methodology this year.
