In January 2011, a planned bomb attack air travel to italy of the African Union Summit was allegedly air travel to italy thwarted by Ethiopian officials, and in March 2011 a small bomb wounded two people in Addis Ababa. The attack resulted in the death of five people, with others injured and kidnapped. Any Canadian citizens already in the Danakil Depression, bounded by but not including the Dessie-Adigrat road, the Dessie-Djibouti road, and the Ethio-Eritrean border, should re-evaluate their continued presence in the region. air travel to italy Similarly, the presence air travel to italy of landmines poses a serious threat to visitors not travelling with a trusted tour company. Explosions off the beaten path may cause injuries and death. Armed assaults against tourists and convoys have also been reported in the past, notably in 2007 when 18 people were kidnapped. Border with Eritrea The border between Eritrea and Ethiopia is closed due to recurring military tensions and an unsettled border dispute, as demonstrated on March 15, 2012 when the Ethiopian military attacked targets in Eritrea. Adjacent areas are part of a special and heavily militarized security corridor where armed conflict could erupt. The security situation is particularly unpredictable in the northern regions of Tigray and Afar. Banditry and the threat of kidnapping are also a concern. Somali region Ongoing air travel to italy military operations against armed insurgent groups in the Somali region of Ethiopia and in the Ogaden and Hararge areas within the region, toward the Somali border, have created an extremely volatile and dangerous security situation. The rebel Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has made specific threats against oil companies and well operators in the Somali region. Humanitarian missions and foreign aid workers have also been subject to attacks and abductions. The presence of landmines in this region poses an additional threat to safety. The areas east and south of Jijiga are also deemed unsafe for travellers.
