Nationwide announced in 2010 that they would not renew as the title sponsor of the PGA Tour's developmental minor league tour after the current contract ran out at the end of 2012. Instead, the Columbus, Ohio-based insurance company would lend their name as the title sponsor of Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament.
With the announcement coming two years ago, the PGA Tour has been in the market for a new company to lend its brand as the umbrella sponsor of the now defunct Nationwide Tour. And with the time drawing short, the PGA Tour announced today that they had found the sponsor they had been looking for.
During the press conference in which the Tour's commissioner, Tim Finchem, and Web.com's CEO, David Brown, pretty much congratulated one another on making the deal, the president of the (now) Web.com Tour, Bill Calfee made it sound as if there was never any other name for the tour.
I ve been at the tour now for 22 years, had the privilege to lead the Web.com Tour now for 12 years, and I can tell you, this is the most exciting time that I can remember in certainly the evolution of this tour, said Calfee.
Of course, the evolution of the tour is wrought with name changes. Beginning in 1990 and sponsored by the Ben Hogan Golf Company, car rentals hertz the tour was originally known as the Ben Hogan Tour. Then, three years later, Nike took over for the next seven years before Buy.com took the rights for the next two years. Following that short relationship, Nationwide became perhaps the most recognizable name for the tour.
The truth of the matter is that it really makes zero difference what they call the NationWeb.com Tour, coined by Scott Michaux , because so long as the PGA Tour is affiliated with it, the money, sponsors and tournaments will stay the same.
Ask any of the players what they think about the change of the name of the Tour and, if they're completely honest, they'll tell you it makes no difference to them. So long as their way of making a living isn't changed, then what difference does it make if they play on the Nationwide Tour, the Web.com Tour or the Nike Tour?

"You see the guy next to you? And the guy next to him? Every one of them, All-Americans. There's an NCAA Champion, a U.S. Amateur champion, a British Open champion -- hell, some of these caddies were All-Americans. So just so you know, nobody here gives a damn if you're an All-American, or if you even went to college at all. All anybody here here wants to know ... can you play stick?" - Craig Stadler
