We are trying to finalize our 2014 trip. I have been to WDW more times than I can count on both hands. Most times we stayed on property. Some as DVC members. And 1 time off property. This time we can't use the DVC membership because my mother is using all the points.
We are a family of 5. We have a room booked at POR Alligator sound of music tours Bayou. I tried to get the summer discounts the day after they released it but I was told for that week and that hotel, they couldn't use any more discounts. So I am paying full rack rate.

There are definitely advantages to stay on and off property. I usually exchange my timeshare week and stay off property. Mostly for the savings. The property I usually say at is literally less than five minutes sound of music tours away. I like having separate bedrooms and a full kitchen for $169 a week. You pay that much for one night at a moderate resort.
Also if you plan on doing Universal or some other off property activities sound of music tours it's pretty convenient as most of the resorts are near the interstate and also provide other options for dining, which can be expensive at WDW if you aren't on DDP which isn't really cheap.
If you aren't doing anything but Disney, then staying on property rocks because you don't need a car and there is transportation etc. looks like off property guests will soon be able to get magic bands ( for a fee) and book FP+ 30 days in advance of their trip.
