I live in Valdosta, GA. I want to fly to Los Angeles, rent a car, drive (along historic Route 66) to Chicago, then fly home. Any travel agents out there or anyone else have thoughts on the most economical way to pursue this?
One-way tickets used to cost more, but with Southwest, Airtran, JetBlue and other low-cost airlines selling point-to-point tickets, the larger airlines are starting to offer this option on competing routes. For JAX airport (closest to Valdosta), you can take Delta Express to Atlanta, doubletree grand hotel miami then Airtran from Atlanta to LA. For Chicago, use Midway Airport and take Airtran MDW-ATL, then Delta Express ATL back to JAX.
Alternatively, you can get an open-jaw ticket, sometimes called multi-stop or multi-destination. Try Delta.com for these; I only recommended Airtran earlier because they re usually a little bit cheaper than Delta (but they don t serve JAX).
Looks like Delta Connection is now serving Valdosta Airport (VLD) with 7 daily flights to Atlanta. In that case, I d only go from JAX if the price was significantly cheaper, and in this case, it looks like JAX is significantly cheaper most of the time (about $272, vs. $478 from VLD).
As far as one-way car rental, I believe Enterprise does that, but it pays to shop around. I really like Booking Buddy for car price comparisons. Also, Smarter Travel doubletree grand hotel miami is great to see what kind of specials are out there. Links below.
