The Malaysian peninsula has never been as popular with tourists as its better known neighbor Thailand. That s what makes it so appealing to us, and it s worth knowing what you are missing by flying into Bangkok instead of Kuala Lumpur, enterprise auto rental and connecting to Langkawi, a group of one-hundred enterprise auto rental islands located off the coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands remain relatively unspoiled, the climate is equatorial, and two thirds of the landscape is covered with rainforest; while coral reefs lie just offshore. Only four of the islands are inhabited and The Datai is located on the largest, known as Pulau Langkawi .
Being honest, I have to share that I really didn t like The Datai first time around. We didn t stay there, as we had actually come to the island to experience the newly opened Four Seasons. It was glitzy and glam, and apart from the eyesore concrete factory that you could see across the bay, it was everything that The Datai was not..! That was back in 2005, so when we had the opportunity to revisit the island in 2012 enjoying Malaysia Airlines new A380 service out of Heathrow we jumped at the chance. Sixteen hours later as we drove in the dark towards the rainforest location of the hotel, Denise turned to me and said that she thought she had just seen a monkey. I smiled enterprise auto rental and told her that she had, but that she hadn t seen anything yet..!
The style here is classic Malay with a touch of Japanese, and the warm woods and local stone blend perfectly with the lush rainforest setting. That s about as "green" as it gets here, so don t be put off by thinking that this is going to be some kind of eco-vacation just because of where you happen to be. Far from it; this is low-key, enterprise auto rental sophisticated luxury at its very best. Eat and drink well in four different restaurants, find the spa and enjoy treatments inspired by the rainforest, and if you need to be active, there s plenty to do, including an array of water sports, mountain biking, hiking and of course, golf. Choose a Beach Villa for best accommodation on property and if you re bringing the family request the four-bedroom Villa Hutan . Staying at The Datai was a pleasure, and one that you should seriously consider next time you are thinking of Southeast Asia as a destination.
GBB Says: Looking for a sophisticated rainforest retreat, with an 18-hole Championship golf course, and beautiful white sandy beach..? You just found it. Sorry Four Seasons, but The Datai is the place to stay, at least in this part of the world..!
